Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist and successful leader to join the Sheffield Speech and Language Therapy Service.

The successful candidate will be based in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals SLT service leading a team of SLTs providing a service within the MDT Head and Neck oncology pathway and also within the general SLT outpatient teams (including Voice, Transgender, Audiology and Dysphagia).The post-holder will specialise in the management of patients with both complex communication disorders, surgical voice restoration and complex dysphagia occurring at all stages along the Head and Neck oncology pathway.

Main duties of the job

As an advanced clinical specialist and expert you will have clinical responsibility for the operational management and strategic direction of a high quality speech and language therapy head and neck oncology service as well as the outpatient SLT teams. Sheffield hosts the regional head and neck cancer centre for surgery (ENT and oral surgery) and non-surgical treatment and is one of the leading recruiters to head and neck cancer trials in the UK.

There is an expectation that the post holders portfolio will be dedicated to direct autonomous expert clinical practice and providing leadership for the clinicians within these teams.

About us

The SLT team in STH is a high performing team which provides a service to individuals who present with communication, voice and swallowing difficulties resulting from a wide range of medical conditions. The SLT team works across all the hospital directorates, across the stroke pathway, integrates into the community based teams, and provides a domiciliary service to people living in their own homes and care homes in Sheffield. Additionally we work into a number of teams in other organisations for example the SHSC Gender Identity Service.

The SLT service across both the acute and community teams in STH has approximately 55 staff (47 therapists, 7 assistants and 4 secretarial staff) (41.23wte).

The SLT teams are highly motivated to provide a quality service to their patients, they are research active and embrace innovation.The service has established processes for supervision and supports personal and professional development.

To be responsible for the co-ordination of, and to lead the strategic development of the speech and language therapy service to all patients referred with head and neck cancer and to provide expert clinical advice to other therapists working with these patient groups both within Sheffield and across the region/nationally

To provide Speech Language Therapy input as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-agency team.
