Job summary

The Renal Services Department is currently recruiting for a whole-time Consultant Nephrologist to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at Northern General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision of inpatient and outpatient care of renal patients, provision of dialysis and support of the home therapies programme. Main duties of the post will include:

  • Providing clinical leadership for the home therapies programme
  • Undertaking Home therapies MDTs and clinics and supporting nurse led clinics
  • Insertion of medical peritoneal dialysis catheters
  • Haemodialysis patient care (clinical lead for a satellite dialysis unit)
  • General nephrology clinics
  • Contributing to the consultant of the week workforce model (including weekends) for the care of inpatients, providing dedicated ward cover with no other clinical commitments, 1 week in 7. Providing non-acute ward cover including daily ward rounds and contribution to MDT discharge planning, 1 week in 7.
  • Mid-week non-resident on call (Monday to Thursday 1 in 7)

Job responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team, to deliver a wide range of nephrology care in the in-patient and out-patient setting, including general nephrology, acute transplantation, AKI, home therapies (PD and HHD) and satellite haemodialysis care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide clinical leadership to manage, grow and continually improve the home therapies programme. Approximately 19% of our dialysis population is on home dialysis and we are aspiring to continually grow this programme. The renal unit has an established a medical PD catheter insertion programme, which has contributed to an expansion of the PD population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to the medical PD catheter insertion programme. There is a strong emphasis on service improvement initiatives within the trust and unit, with on-going projects in transplantation, vascular access and peritoneal dialysis. The renal unit has a strong focus on research with 3 academic consultant nephrologists, including a world renowned expert on peritoneal dialysis and with close links to the University of Sheffield. There will be ample opportunity for the appointee to pursue research activities.
