Job responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team, to deliver a wide range of nephrology care in the in-patient and out-patient setting, including general nephrology, acute transplantation, AKI, home therapies (PD and HHD) and satellite haemodialysis care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide clinical leadership to manage, grow and continually improve the home therapies programme. Approximately 19% of our dialysis population is on home dialysis and we are aspiring to continually grow this programme. The renal unit has an established a medical PD catheter insertion programme, which has contributed to an expansion of the PD population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to the medical PD catheter insertion programme. There is a strong emphasis on service improvement initiatives within the trust and unit, with on-going projects in transplantation, vascular access and peritoneal dialysis. The renal unit has a strong focus on research with 3 academic consultant nephrologists, including a world renowned expert on peritoneal dialysis and with close links to the University of Sheffield. There will be ample opportunity for the appointee to pursue research activities.

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise
• Name on the specialist register for Nephrology or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview
• MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

• MD or PhD or equivalent

Clinical experience

Essential

• Ability to work as an independent practitioner in nephrology and possess broad clinical experience in all aspects of the nephrology, dialysis and transplantation.
• Experience of independently & proactively managing home therapies clinics, MDTs and working with home therapies team with a view to embracing continuous service improvement.

Desirable

• Experience undertaking & granular understanding of QI work in haemodialysis/ peritoneal dialysis
• Experience of inserting medical PD catheters with understanding of quality control

Research

Essential

• Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
• Participation in guideline development

Desirable

• Publications in Peer reviewed journals

Teaching and training

Essential

• Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels

CPD

Essential

• Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

Desirable

• Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Management and Administration

Essential

• Evidence of the understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management

Desirable

• Experience of working with management groups

Clinical governance and audit

Essential

• Experience in performing clinical audit
