Job summary

This twelve month post will provide an opportunity to gain sub-specialty experience and training at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. The Sheffield Ophthalmology Department is a progressive and forward-thinking department. It is exceptionally well equipped, including state-of-the-art ophthalmic imaging facilities

The post is intended for Ophthalmologists who have recently completed their ophthalmic specialty training, and have been awarded their CCT or expect to be awarded a CCT or equivalent within 6 months of the date of interview.

Main duties of the job

The person appointed will assist the senior staff in Ophthalmology to provide ophthalmology services and to develop a special interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery.The appointee would be expected to play a full part in the teaching and governance activities of the directorate.

Ophthalmology Directorate Information

The Ophthalmology needs of Sheffield are served by a single Department of Ophthalmology based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital with a new Eye Centre at the Northern General Hospital in. In addition to this post, there are twenty four Consultant Ophthalmologists including an established Nurse Consultant who has clinical sessions in the Medical Retinal Service. There are five consultants dedicated to the VR Service. The served catchment area includes South Yorkshire, North Trent, South Humber, parts of Lincolnshire and West Yorkshire.

The team works together to provide a local Ophthalmology Service to the City of Sheffield and provides both general and sub-specialised services to a wider catchment area within North Trent and beyond. The consultant members of the department provide a wide range of general and sub-specialist services within Ophthalmology, with full cross-referral of patients to appropriate consultants.Screening Service

CLINICAL DUTIES

Appointments are made to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the person appointed is required to be sufficiently flexible to undertake their main clinical duties at any of the sites within the Trust and/or to change their base hospital. Given the special interest of this post, a proportion of the duties of this post will be carried out in the Sheffield Childrens Hospital.

The duties of the post will be reviewed from time to time according to service needs. The exact breakdown and timetable may be adjusted to suit the experience and interests of the appointee.

The Consultants in Ophthalmology will delegate specific duties and responsibilities in accordance with the grading of the post and the needs of the department. Changes in duties and responsibilities will be agreed with the consultants to whom the post holder will be responsible, initially Mr Kurt Spiteri Cornish, VR Lead.

The person appointed will assist the senior staff in Ophthalmology to provide ophthalmology services as follows. It is envisaged that the initial allocation of sessions will be as follows and this will be changed after three months so that the appointee works with all five VR Surgeons:
