Job summary

We are looking for a fully trained and experienced Band 7 Chief Technician (linac engineer) to join our team of nine Engineers in the Radiotherapy Equipment Maintenance Service, part of the Radiotherapy Physics Department at Weston Park Cancer Centre in Sheffield.

The successful candidate will already have a track record with linac technology, having already attended Varians technical maintenance courses for Clinac / TrueBeam or equivalent.

Candidates with less training/experience may be appointed on a lower band (Band 6).

Main duties of the job

The Radiotherapy Equipment Management Service (REMS) looks after all the major radiotherapy equipment: performing preventative maintenance and quality assurance as well as all troubleshooting and repairs, ensuring maximum clinical availability and treatment accuracy.

The comprehensive mechanical manufacturing facilities on site are well-used.

REMS also carry out first line servicing for the Philips CT scanners, and contribute to management of ward-based equipment.

The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to on-call and weekend working rotas.

Weston Park Cancer Centre has a modern fleet of 8 Varian linacs (3 x Varian Truebeam, 2 x Truebeam STx, 2 x Varian 2100, 1 Varian Unique), an Xstrahl kilovoltage machine and two Philips CT scanners which provide a full range of advanced techniques for our patients including SABR.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To assist in the provision of highly specialised linear accelerator services to Weston Park Hospital.

Working within an ISO 9000 QA system to ensure a professional, high quality specialised service providing repair, calibration, quality assurance and maintenance to the Radiotherapy Departments linear accelerators, simulators, therapeutic X-ray machines, and associated patient data systems.

The postholder will, as part of a team, ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime.

The radiotherapy equipment covered incorporates electrical, electronic, refrigeration, mechanical, computer software, pneumatic, hydraulic and high vacuum systems.

The REM section also provides repair, calibration, and maintenance to patient medical equipment located at Weston Park Hospital.

The postholder prepares linear accelerators for clinical use on a daily basis and performs routine quality control and dosimetry procedures on the equipment.

A high proportion of the postholders work includes non-routine servicing and repair to component level of highly specialised radiotherapy equipment.

This is mostly of a very complex nature and is often pressured by time constraints.

Helps to develop clinical devices used within radiotherapy and other departments.

These may be from initial concept through design and manufacture to implementation.

As a secondary role the post holder may also use their expertise to maintain and repair medical equipment used within clinical environment at Weston Park Hospital and must be fully conversant with rules appertaining to medical equipment.
