Main duties of the job

We are seeking a versatile, enthusiastic individual to provide senior medical input and leadership to our well established, dynamic CAMHS Liaison team at Southampton Children's Hospital. You will play a highly valued role in the care of children and young people with a range of psychiatric needs.

The CAMHS Liaison team works in close collaboration with medical, nursing and allied health staff according to a biopsychosocial model to address the mental health needs of service users under 18 within the Trust. It operates from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and is predominantly inpatient based, with some scope for outpatient work. The core team includes 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists, an OT, Psychiatry trainees, and input/cover from the Bursledon House Consultant Child Psychiatrist. There may occasionally be a request for consultation to the separate matron led team based in the Emergency Department who see under 18s presenting with self-harm and other mental health crises.

  • Providing mental health care to UHS paediatric patients through expert assessment, formulation, diagnosis, case planning and appropriate treatment. This includes playing a key role in the eating disorders team.
  • Providing consultation and education to trust staff and other service providers.
  • Collaborating constructively with patients, carers/families, other trust staff and external service providers.
  • Ensuring clinical practice meets best practice standards and is informed by the extant evidence base.
  • Contributing to the ongoing improvement of the service through active involvement in research, professional education and staff development activities.
  • Adhering to and complying with all relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Children Act 1989.
  • Assisting in developing and implementing clinical pathways, protocols and policies.
  • Assisting in resolving patient and relative complaints.
  • Participating in undergraduate and postgraduate education.
  • Providing directions, supervision and training to junior medical staff.

We are looking for a versatile and enthusiastic individual with:

  • Higher training and experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry work.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, carers and other health professionals across organisations.
  • Experience in diagnosing and formulating paediatric mental health presentation and developing and implementing tailored treatment/management plans.
  • An Ability to work within clinical governance structures in health-care settings and to provide clinical leadership within management structures within the health-care system.
