Main duties of the job
We are looking for enthusiastic Paediatric EM Consultants from either Paediatric /Adult background to join our expanding team & support further the development of our well-established Children's Emergency Department at UHS. The department provides a centre for Paediatric Emergency care and is the level 1 paediatric major trauma centre for the South Coast. It is the acute front door of Southampton Children's Hospital and is supported by both general paediatric & sub-speciality teams.
The Children's ED receives approximately 35,000 patients per year and receives both GP & self referrals from the local city of Southampton as well as being the paediatric major trauma centre with a 24/7 helipad and the tertiary care centre for many paediatric subspecialties. We currently have 8 WTE PEM Consultants from both a paediatric & adult background and work closely with our General Paediatric & General ED colleagues who provide shifts within the department.In Sept 2019 we opened our new Children's ED which provides 11 acute assessment beds, 8 short stay beds & paediatric X-ray. We have a dedicated paediatric Resus bay co-located within the main ED and a separate procedural sedation room. The department provides PEM grid training to both ED & Paediatric trainees and also delivers training to GP & Paediatric trainees. We have a nurse practitioner training programme, liaison CAMHS and youth workers and we participate actively in education & research.

- Oversee & deliver acute care to ill and injured children & young people who attend the Childrens ED
- Deliver Consultant ward round to the Short Stay Unit admissions and be responsible for GP referrals working closely with the General Paediatric team
- Team lead both medical & major trauma resuscitations
- Educational and clinical supervision of trainees
- Deliver regular morning teaching sessions as well as engage in wider teaching opportunities for a variety of levels of trainee
- Deliver SPA roles according to an individuals skill set and also to address departmental requirements
- Support trainees with research, audit, QIP and other projects
WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR:
- Consultant or trainee within 6 months of CCT who is trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (adult /paediatric background) or General paediatrician with equivalent training
- Experience in working in Paediatric emergency department & short stay unit
- Highly motivated and able to deliver service improvement
- Good communication skills and ability to work within an MDT
