Due to service growth an excellent opportunity has arisen for a part time band 5 nurse to work with the fantastic, friendly team of the Southampton Dermatology Centre based at the Royal South Hants Hospital. The Centre operates from 08.00 - 18.00 Monday to Friday, with some optional out of hours/ Saturday working.

Main Purpose

To support the workload of the Southampton Dermatology Centre as required Assist in various Dermatology Clinics/Surgeries Lead in nurse led activities Participate in MDT meetings Attend in house/external specialist training Take an active role in the induction and orientation of new staff members Demonstrates effective time management and prioritisation of workload.

Clinical Responsibilities

Maintain a professional behaviour at all times and promote a positive image of University Hospital Southampton. To be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence-based care. To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust policies and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility. To contribute to the development of evidence-based guidelines/policies relating to speciality. To ensure accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate written and electronic documentation. To be responsible for ensuring effective mechanisms are in place so that all clinical and non-clinical incidents, including serious incidents are properly reported, investigated and changes made to avoid recurrence. To supervise unqualified staff, to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and resources to carry out delegated aspects of care.

General Duties

1. To work in a team of nursing staff, ensuring high standards of care are developed and maintained within that team.

2. To provide support (direct and indirect) to members of the team, identifying and addressing their learning needs.

3. To give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, immediately acting on any changes in the patients condition, and reporting them to the relevant health care professional.

4. To work with medical staff and other members of the health care team to ensure that treatments are carried out within agreed policies.

5. To maintain accurate records of observation, treatment, and patient/family care always ensuring confidentiality.

6. To receive patients and their relatives in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner, participate in providing information and support.

7. To ensure the safe custody of patients belongings and valuables according to Trust policy.

8. To participate in the checking and administration of prescribed drugs (including controlled drugs) and other substances in accordance with Trust policy.

9. To carry out Trust policy on the safe storage and administration of prescribed drugs and other substances.

10. To co-ordinate the arrangements for the discharge of patients and their continuing care in liaison with the multi-disciplinary team.

11. To ensure that all equipment is in good working order and ready for immediate use. Report any defective equipment or provision of supplies to the appropriate department.

12. To inform relevant parties of any untoward events or problems affecting patients or staff, and to begin preliminary action as appropriate.

13. To support the Fire Group Leader, ensuring that all staff are aware of: Position of firefighting equipment. Standard fire procedure

14. To always uphold confidentiality due to patients and relatives and in all situations according to Trust policy

15. To adhere to policies and procedures and be familiar with the location of current files.

16. To ensure compliance with Infection Control standards, in line with Trust policy.

You are responsible for ensuring that the patient, family, and carers are at the centre of everything you do.

The Department has a huge range of clinics including Ultraviolet Light Therapy, Botox, Acne, topical treatment, 2 week wait skin cancer, photo dynamic therapy, patch testing of which many are nurse led. We also perform minor skin surgeries daily.

Therefore, the role of the Band 5 is varied, and no two days are ever the same. There are opportunities for career progression with the possibility to specialise in certain areas. No Dermatology experience is necessary but desirable as well as a keen interest in all Dermatology treatments. Full training will be given.
