Main duties of the job

A locum consultant is required to be employed on a short fixed term contract for the period 1st October to 31st December 2024 on NHS contract and terms and conditions.

Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery sits within the Child Health Care Group, which is part of the Women's and Children's Division.A general service is provided to the children of the Southampton health economy. More specialist services cover the tertiary population stretching across the South coast. Our catchment area is bounded by Bristol, Oxford and London and includes multiple spokes with other areas to be included within the unit expansion over the next 5 years.

Admissions occur via our dedicated paediatric orthopaedic ward, which includes a 4 bay HDU, and the paediatric day care unit. We are also supported by a 16 bedded PICU unit and high dependency facilities both on and off our ward.

Emergency admissions occur via Emergency Department, regional referral and the paediatric medical admissions unit.Clinics occur within a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic area and are supported by plaster room and on-site orthotics.

We currently run a number of peripheral clinics held in the regional hospitals across the south-central coast area and Channel Islands. Surgery is carried out in a dedicated paediatric orthopaedic theatre within the paediatric theatre unit.

The successful applicant will cover a period of planned leave of a consultant team member, for a period of around 3 months. As such, there is little time for induction and it is essential that the applicant has worked in this department already and knows the team well. The successful applicant will work with eight of the nine existing Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons to provide a full supra regional paediatric orthopaedic service. They will participate in a 1:8 on call rota to provide a 24-hour paediatric orthopaedic service within the Southampton Paediatric Major trauma centre. The candidate must be able to build onto existing close working relationships with the other consultants, junior doctors and allied health professionals in the department.

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent recognised qualification
  • Fellowship trained in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery

Desirable

  • ATLS qualified or equivalent
  • Previous experience within Southampton Children's Hospital as a locum consultant

Previous or relevant experience

  • Full training in paediatric orthopaedic surgery
  • Audit experience
