Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the innovative and established Acute Medical Unit (AMU) team within Emergency Care at University Hospitals Southampton as an AMU Consultant. This is a substantive post.

This is an opportunity to join a team of 11 Acute Medical Consultants. The unit serves a population of 350,000 and is a teaching department of the University of Southampton. The Acute Medical Unit is a purpose built 54 bedded unit, with an additional surge capacity of 14 beds plus a short-stay area downstream. We have a Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility that is expanding pathways and services to meet the increasing demand for emergency care both from primary care and the emergency department. The AMU team has also recently developed virtual acute care pathways which will be developed further and supported by this role.

Job responsibilities

WHAT YOULL DO:

SDEC currently has 7 trolley spaces and 10+ chairs for assessment of both expected patients and those patients on an ambulatory pathway. The department has a reputation for clinical excellence and innovation. We are looking to appoint a dynamic consultant who has ambition and drive to further develop our services over 7 days.

Working within a team of 11 consultants in the Acute Medical Unit and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) you will provide hands on consultant service between on any one of four rolling shifts spanning 14 hours 8am-10pm.

Clinical duties:

  • Provide Consultant service to the AMU and SDEC and an in-reach service to the emergency department and direct GP admission services
  • Undertake Post Take Ward Rounds of all admissions and review all non-specialty patients on AMU.
  • Lead on Medical Handover of Patients
  • Jointly lead the organisation and development of Acute Medicine in the division including arrangements for the associated junior medical staff.
  • Work in close collaboration with both Specialist and Emergency Department Consultants and Primary Care to improve the management of medical emergencies, to achieve the 4-hour emergency access target and support the development of ambulatory pathways.
  • Offer immediate support to junior medical staff involved in the management of emergency medicine.
  • To participate in the teaching and training of junior medical and nurse practitioner staff
  • To participate in AMU governance including morbidity and mortality meetings

This is a 10PA (8 DCC and 2 SPA) post which can be adjusted to individual needs.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for someone who has the knowledge, clinical and technical skills to provide a joint consultant led service in Emergency Care and assist driving the service forward. Candidates should have a CCT/CESR in Acute and General Internal Medicine and on the GMCs Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CCT on the date of interview may also apply. Applicants who have dual accreditation in another speciality, including Acute Internal Medicine, are encouraged to apply for the post.
