Job summary

Southampton Neonatal Unit has an exciting opportunity for a trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner position, working on the Neonatal Unit, Princess Anne Hospital.

The successful candidate will start as a band 7 and will be enrolled on to the accredited ANNP training programme at Southampton University, starting September 2023. The theoretical component of the course will be delivered through the university, with clinical training and mentorship provided on the Neonatal Unit.

Following completion of the programme, you will undertake a period of supernumerary time whilst still a band 7, you will then step up to an 8a working within an established team on the SHO tier of the medical rota as a holistic practitioner supporting both medical and nursing colleagues.

A shift system is in place which includes weekends and night shifts. You will be expected to work in all areas of the neonatal service with an opportunity to lead in specific areas.

  • UHS also hosts the Network Neonatal Transport Service (SONeT).
  • There are approximately 6000 deliveries per year in the hospital and many of these are high risk deliveries referred to the tertiary UHS Fetal Medicine service within Princess Anne Hospital.
  • The Neonatal Unit has 37 cots, 23 Intensive and High Care and 14 Special Care cots.
  • UHS is a lead centre within the Wessex Neonatal ODN Network and provides the full range of sub speciality services and referrals for specialist care are received from surrounding hospitals within the Network.

What youll do

Your continuing professional development is encouraged and you will be expected to support education programmes, clinical governance, audit, guidelines and research. Support will be given to your specific area of special interest e.g. research, special care, FIC, transport and you will be expected to participate in the wide range of educational and training opportunities within the department.

This is a clinical post designed to provide experience of provision of tertiary neonatal care, which would be suitable for an experienced neonatal nurse looking for a new opportunity to train and qualify as an ANNP.

  • Neonatal intensive care (medical, surgical and cardiac babies) including procedures, ward rounds and updating families.
  • Neonatal special care managing patients with less intensive needs
  • Managing postnatal ward babies and community reviews
