Job summary
We are looking to recruit 2 engineering apprentices into the maintenance team at UHS. The apprentices will train as either Electrical (Electricians)or Mechanical (Fitter) engineers and gain experience in a number of areas of Building Services and Healthcare Facilities Engineering.As a maintenance Craftsperson Apprentice at UHS you will complete a time served apprenticeship (pro rata depending on current apprenticeship progress) across our hospital sites including Southampton General, Princess Anne and South Hants.
Our Craftsperson Apprentices are one of the many unique roles which keep our hospital running. The skills you will learn through an apprenticeship will allow you to learn and develop the skills to enable you to complete a varied range of tasks from small routine maintenance to critical emergency fixes. We will facilitate your training to become a fully qualified Craftsperson and to deliver our unique services. When done well, your work might go unnoticed by our patients but is always valued by our 13.5 thousand staff because we all know it takes over 250 job roles to deliver our hospital services and we are committed to working together to serve our community.

Skills Mechanical Apprentices will develop include: Pipefitting & Plumbing Mechanical Assembly Fault Finding Bench Fitting Lifting & Slinging Controls & Building Automation
Skills Electrical Apprentices (electrician) will develop include: Installation & maintenance of wiring & containment (Conduit, Tray, trunking) Safe working on low voltage systems including 3-phase 415v Fault finding & diagnostics Controls & Building Automation Commissioning of controls equipment Test & Inspection of electrical circuits
Previous engineering or construction experience is not necessary for this role; however awareness gained through activities such as vehicle maintenance, DIY or similar hand-on activity may be advantageous. The apprenticeship is open to all ages from 16 onwards and people from allbackgrounds. The following attributes would be beneficial.
Enjoys problem solving Able to apply learnt skills to real-world situations Enjoys undertaking hands on tasks Good communication skills Enjoys working as part of a team
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 5 (or C) or higher including English & Maths Fluent with use of internet & Microsoft office programs (Word, Excel) Interest in engineering Motivated to learn new skills Good time keeping
Core working hours are 07h30-15h30 Monday Friday
During your Craftsperson apprenticeship you will undertake training and instruction to achieve nationally recognised qualification as an engineering or building apprentice. Undertake practical training and instruction relating to the engineered or fabric services and process specific to the University Hospital Southampton Estate to satisfactorily achieve recognised craft status.
Apprenticeship Criteria
These roles are funded by the Government Apprenticeship Scheme and do not attract visa sponsorship. The Trust is only able to offer apprenticeships to people who are eligible under the Apprenticeship funding rules in force from time to time and who will remain eligible for the entire period of the Apprenticeship. If you need a visa to work in the UK, your visa must cover the entire period of the Apprenticeship.
