Job summary

Do you have an interest in acute medical and renal dietetics? Do you want to provide mentorship and supervision to newly qualified dietitians working in general medicine?

Due to an increasing number of medical beds opening at Southampton General Hospital, we are recruiting a Band 6 HCPC registered dietitian to join our team. The successful post holder will join the acute adult dietetic team to provide specialist dietetic input to patients on the acute medical, respiratory, and renal wards; seeing the more complex patients on these caseloads. The post holder will also provide mentorship and supervision to newly qualified dietitians working across the medical wards. This is a great opportunity for someone new to supervision and leadership to build and develop these skills with the support of a band 7 team lead and the lead acute adult dietitian.

The department of dietetics and speech and language therapy employs approximately 130 staff, with clinical experts working in a range of specialties, providing acute and community services in adults and paediatrics. You will join the medicine dietetic team working alongside dietitians specialising in hepatology, neurology, acute medicine and medicine for older people.

You will: Be responsible for the provision of a specialist dietetic service on the respiratory and renal medicine wards. Be a key member of the multidisciplinary teams and attend multidisciplinary meetings. Provide nutritional support to patients including management of oral nutrition support, enteral feeding and home enteral feed discharges. Liaise with our local regional renal team. Provide therapeutic renal dietary advice for patients with kidney disease requiring low potassium, low phosphate diet and fluid restrictions. This includes both inpatient wards and an outpatient clinic. Supervise and support junior dietitians, dietetic assistants, and student dietitians, particularly providing mentorship and advice to newly qualified dietitians and our growing team of dietetic assistants. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to work within an MDT as a specialist dietitian and have the confidence to present and discuss your professional opinion with colleagues. You must be able to provide professional feedback and guidance to junior members of the team. With a varied and interesting caseload, this post requires a dynamic, assertive person with an excellent breadth of knowledge and good rapport building skills. Previous experience in renal dietetics is not required as training will be provided. Part time and flexible working will be considered.
