Job summary

Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor in cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care commencing 1st August 2023 or as soon as possible.

This post is based in the Wessex Cardiac Centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The unit is the third busiest UK cardiac centre with some of the lowest mortality rates. The ITU has 16 beds and there are 22 all day cardiac theatre lists per week.

This post combines clinical duties with an excellent teaching programme and research opportunities. The clinical component involves providing anaesthesia for adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery and provision of care for patients in adult cardiac intensive care. It also includes on-site out of hours cover for the adult cardiac intensive care unit. The post offers wide exposure to all types of acquired adult and congenital cardiac disease except for cardiac transplantation.

WHAT YOULL DO

  • Work full time as a Specialty Doctor in cardiac anaesthesia and adult cardiac intensive care.
  • Work flexibly with the consultants, other specialty doctors and senior clinical fellows to provide a full service to cardiac theatres and intensive care.
  • Deliver anaesthesia to patients undergoing cardiac surgery or cardiology procedures.
  • Participate in cover (including some out of hours cover) for the cardiac ICU on an approximately 1 in 8 rota.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

  • An experienced doctor capable of providing specialist anaesthesia to cardiac patients in theatres, catheter labs and intensive care.
  • A doctor with transoesophageal echocardiography experience and, ideally, certification to deliver the perioperative requirements of patients undergoing cardiac surgery/ cardiology
  • A doctor who excels in teamwork, flexible working and delivering education.

A doctor appointed to this grade:

  • Shall have full registration and Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council; and
  • Shall have completed at least four years full-time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or

Shall have equivalent experience and competencies
