Job summary

Are you a Consultant Urological Surgeon with an interest in Andrology? Here at University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) has an exciting opportunity to join our team Urology department.

You will join our tertiary andrology service and expand the team. We have a high volume andrology practice involving; urethroplasty, male incontinence, penile cancer, sexual dysfunction and male fertility surgery. The tertiary andrology service has a wide catchment spanning Hampshire & IOW, Dorset, Wiltshire and Channel Islands.

UHS is a large teaching hospital, tertiary referral centre and major trauma centre. We have strong a academic portfolio with natural links to Southampton University and Medical School. We have a well established clinical trials unit supported by NIHR research nurses and currently an NIHR research fellow. We are amongst the highest recruiters to clinical trials nationally.

Main duties of the job

YOUR MAIN DUTIES

  • Provision and continued development of tertiary andrology services
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of urological patients
  • To share with colleagues' responsibility for the day-to-day management of the urological patients
  • Teaching and training of junior staff and medical students.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

We are looking for a motivated, dynamic team player, with fellowship experience, who wants to continue to develop the UHS andrology service and contribute towards the planning of the future shape of the Urology Area Network.

Job description

Job responsibilities

We have a wide breadth of benign service ranging from andrology, stones, BPH and general urology. We network with Salisbury for FNUU (female, neuro and urodynamic urology) expertise and with UCLH for penile cancer and penile prosthesis surgery. Advanced regional discussions regarding the formation of a Urology Area Network (UAN) with Salisbury District Hospital (SDH) and Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust (HHFT) are ongoing with the aspiration being high volume, medium and high complexity benign work in ringfenced benign operating hubs.

Outpatient clinics, diagnostics and LA procedures are run from our dedicated UHS urology centre where the specialist andrology clinic is weekly on Monday mornings. This purpose-built urology centre has 11 consultation rooms, 2 flexible cystoscopy rooms, a procedure room and on site lithotripter. We carry out hot and elective ESWL, urodynamics, flexible cystscopy, flexi laser ablation of bladder tumours, LA precision point prostate biopsies, LA minor ops and bladder instillations for benign conditions as well as for bladder cancer- BCG and hyperthermic MMC.

We work closely and collaboratively with our allied surgery specialties. Of particular importance to andrology, we have a paediatric surgery team, plastic surgery team, a 24/7 Interventional radiology service and fertility services.

On call will initially be 1:11 with 24/7 middle grade cover with future consultant expansion within the year anticipated.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
