Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at University Hospital Southampton Trust to undertake a level 6 apprenticeship in Therapeutic Radiography.

You will be working as part of multidisciplinary team treating patients with cancer using radiation in an innovative and ever developing field of healthcare.

Southampton's Radiotherapy department is newly equipped with state of the art treatment Linacs and we are the first centre in the UK to have Exactrac Dynamic in clinical use on 3 of our 7 Linacs providing sub-millimetre correction.

This exciting role provides candidates with the opportunity to earn whilst you learn, gets hand on clinical practice as well as theory-based learning through Sheffield Hallam University.

  • To work within the Radiotherapy department on the Radiotherapy Radiographer Apprenticeship programme.
  • Work under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner
  • As part of the multi-disciplinary team, the post holder will fulfil a key role in providing radiotherapy, care and support to individuals as specified in standard radiotherapy protocols.
  • The post holder will fulfil all tasks and work as part of a team responsible for providing an efficient service in the Radiotherapy Department.
  • To perform a range of radiotherapy duties and procedures, as detailed in the apprenticeship programme, under the supervision of a qualified therapy radiographer.
  • Attend virtual tutorials and webinars and complete all e-learning as instructed by Higher Education Training Provider.

Working with qualified therapeutic radiographers to learn how to treat cancer patients using ionising radiation (radiotherapy treatment)

Working with state of art imaging and treatment equipment

Providing support and care to patients receiving cancer treatmentCompleting a level 6 apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University via distance learning. The apprenticeship runs over 3 years, based in University Hospital Southamptons Radiotherapy department, and comprises of:

  • On the job training based within our pioneering radiotherapy department, working directly with patients receiving cancer treatment.
  • Off the job training - following an integrated timetable with Sheffield Hallam University. The University course commences in March 2023; attendance will be mostly through distance learning although you will be expected to attend a few days on site at the University.
  • Completion of a BSc (Hons) degree in Therapeutic Radiography, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

What were looking for

The ideal candidates should want to work in a caring and compassionate role.

You will need to have good communication skills and be a pro-active and conscientious team worker.

The post is 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday.

You must be able to evidence the following entry requirements to undertake the apprenticeship course:

2 GCSE passes at grade C or grade 4 and above including Mathematics, English language or literature. Level 2 equivalent literacy & numeracy qualifications will be accepted.

Plus one of the following:

  • 120 UCAS points from 3 A levels. Or equivalent from national BTEC qualifications e.g.: extended diploma in applied science, health science or health studies.
  • Successful completion of an Access to HE Diploma in health studies, health science, nursing, or another science-based course.
  • If you are taking an Access course not listed, please contact the University to discuss prior to application.
  • Previous degree in a related subject.
  • Evidence of successful formal accredited study at level 3 and a minimum of 6 months experience in a health and social care capacity
