Job summary

University Hospital Southampton is looking for a motivated and dynamic B7 Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our friendly and innovative team within the Paediatric at Southampton Children's Hospital. This role is advertised at 30 hours and is a permanent post. This role will have a focus on non-oncology palliative care working alongside the Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist MDT

About the team

The Paediatric Palliative Care service works across Southampton Childrens Hospital and external stakeholder agencies across the Wessex region, providing vital palliative care to vulnerable children and their families.

The Paediatric Palliative Care service is made up of two Consultants who work between Southampton Children's Hospital and Naomi House. In practice this mean the post holder will work across The Children's Hospital and Naomi House. As a team we work to provide specialist palliative care input to inpatients in hospital and across the Wessex.

Working with the existing multidisciplinary team you will be responsible for:

  • Providing specialist advice, effective leadership and support to health care professionals and parents/carers of children requiring high quality end of life care.

  • Co-ordinating and leading multi-disciplinary approaches to symptom management and end of life care.

  • Communicating and dealing with sensitive and distressing situations, managing these is an appropriate manner

  • Managing your own work load, assessing and prioritising within agreed specialist guidelines, ensuring documentation is completed to Trust policy and in accordance with NMC requirements

  • Contributing to the development of the specialist service, ensuring documentation and programmes of care are updated regularly.

  • Building good working relationships with the multidisciplinary team and providing support to staff on the ward

  • Play a key role in the development of the wider regional Palliative Care service and development of a Childrens Palliative Care Network in Wessex

  • You must be able to demonstrate a compassionate approach to patient care and the public, as well as the ability to meet robust clinical operational demands.

  • Specialist clinical skills and experience within the specialist area

  • Someone with a Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits) , Masters Degree within relevant speciality or equivalent level of knowledge to be assessed through evidence of relevant speciality training, experience or portfolio this is an essential criteria

  • Evidence of supporting a range of learners in practice as well as promoting effective learning in practice

  • Someone with the ability to lead a team and service

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal

  • Evidence based care within own career
