Job summary
We have an opportunity for a nurse with an interest and experience in nutrition support, to join our well established multi-professional Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Team (NSIFT) at the University Hospital Southampton, NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). This post will progress to a Band 7 CNS post on achievement of relevant competencies.
About the team
You will be a key member of this multiprofessiona team, which includes doctors, specialist nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and psychologists and will work closely with a nutrition clinical nurse specialist. You will be based with the acute clinical dietetic team at Southampton General Hospital and work closely with them to support patients requiring both enteral and parenteral nutrition from a wide range of established, specialist, regional services including intestinal failure, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology and GI surgery. We have strong links with the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre with nutrition as a key theme.

Our nationally recognised Intestinal Failure Unit at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is looking for a Specialist Nurse, who has completed or nearly MSc and has a comprehensive understanding of Intestinal Failure (IF) and the complexities in caring for this group of patients.
- Provide specialist nurse care, advice and support to adults requiring nutrition support both autonomously and in collaboration with the multi-professional Nutrition Support and Intestinal Failure Team and the dietitians.
- Work collaboratively and contribute effectively with multi-professional ward teams and professionals involved in Nutritional Support (Nurses, Pharmacists, Clinicians and Dietitians) sharing core, specialist clinical roles and responsibilities.
- Facilitate evidenced based care and act as a clinical expert/role model for all health professionals within the trust to ensure the delivery of high standards of nutritional care.
- Actively participate and contribute to team meetings
- Educate and train health care professionals in adult nutrition support.

- Whilst working within the team structure, the role relies predominantly on independent working and you will be responsible for planning your workload and prioritising effectively.

You will demonstrate a good understanding of the issues affecting people requiring nutrition support, including physiological, social and psychological factors. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills and an empathic nature to to help patients manage their long term condition. You will have the ability to undertake teaching on an individual or group basis. You will have a high standard of personal organisation and time management skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands.
