Senior Physical Healthcare Nurse

Job summary

This role requires a Registered General Nurse to work as part of a team delivering physical healthcare within inpatient mental health wards and clinics. The role will include both direct care delivery and also the training development and support of the existing nursing workforce in physical healthcare.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality physical healthcare to mental health patients, working as part of multidisciplinary teams in Adult Mental Health Inpatient Services

To take a lead on nursing related physical healthcare delivery and the support and development of skills and competency in the nursing workforce.

- Vaccinations- Annual physical healthcare checks- Chronic, complex wound management- Wound care- National Health screening programmes (where applicable)- Long term condition management use the quality outcomes framework- Phlebotomy- ECG- Continence management

Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of healthcare for patients.

Safe administration of medication in accordance with National, Trust and Local policies

Provide a triage service and clinical interventions, recognising environmental limitations and the need for appropriate referral, assessment and transfer of patients who require care within wider NHS provision.

Respond to healthcare emergencies within the hospital in accordance with the Trust's and Local policies and procedures.

Maintain accurate healthcare records

Deliver evidence based care

Seek specialist advice from other Healthcare professionals both internal and external.

Handles sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

Organise and be responsible for the allocation of workload to deliver effective and efficient high quality care.

To provide basic leadership to junior staff by maintaining professional standards ensuring adherence to all relevant policies and procedures to ensure the delivery of high quality care.

Promote independent self-management of patients healthcare needs

Respect Patients individuality and maintain their privacy and dignity within the constraints of the acute mental health ward environment.

Actively participate in the development of the physical healthcare agenda within the hospital setting.

Ensures the effective and efficient use of resources within their own sphere of responsibility.

Prioritises own workload based on clinical priority

Responsible for identifying own learning needs and participate in training to develop and maintain own knowledge, personal qualities and skills.

  • Able to undertake training in physical intervention including Prevention, managing violence and aggression and moving and handling of patients.
  • To be able to work for long periods of time using visual display equipment.

Qualifications (Academic / Professional) or Training

  • First level registered nurse, RGN
  • Bachelor of science or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Post graduate study in long term condition management.

  • Experience working clinically nurse or equivalent for a minimum of 2 years.
