Job summary

These posts are subject to National NHS T&Cs, paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during nights, weekends and bank holidays and we offer a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 to new starters with the Trust in this role (payable in instalments over a 2 year period)

YOU have an exciting opportunity to be a part of a new service delivering healthcare services to a small group of men within the Immigration estate.

The Swinderby Residential Short-Term Holding Facility will hold up to 39 adult men for a period of up to 5 days. As part of a small team, you will offer a holistic package of care to a vulnerable group of men ensuring any immediate healthcare concerns are managed, prescribed medications are continued, and a safe discharge is facilitated. An important part of your role will be to offer emotional support to this group of men at an uncertain time in their lives.

The service provision will be seven days a week 24 hours a day although the Mental Health nursing role operates 9-5 Monday to Friday. You will work in partnership with other providers to achieve high quality outcomes for the service user group. We aim to provide healthcare to those detained that is equivalent to those in the community.

Main duties of the job

As the units Mental Health Nurse you will deliver a wide variety of care from initial assessment, care planning, risk assessment/management, brief interventions and mental health promotion.

Nursing in a secure environment provides the perfect opportunity to offer a positive nurse led health experience to a group of patients who are usually identified as experiencing poor health outcomes.

Working as part of a small team you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to our patients, who are often not in receipt of essential healthcare services in the community - for a variety of reasons.

Whilst in our care, we will endeavour to empower our patients to become more aware of their own mental health needs and support them to play an active role in maintaining their own mental wellbeing.

We will support the postholder to develop areas of speciality which is of interest to them and can offer additional training as required.

We also offer a supportive preceptorship package for newly qualified nurses.

You will work closely with our Home Office and Detention Officer colleagues to provide a high standard of safe and patient centred healthcare services.

The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. The Directorate provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.

The Directorate provides healthcare to 8 prisons and one Residential Short-Term Holding Facility. You are part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development. We also offer services within the Personality Disorder Pathway, including Therapeutic Communities (within prisons), Community and Prison Personality Disorder services and specialist Veteran Services.

You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of healthcare for patients.

For the safe administration of medications in accordance with National, Trust and Local policies

Provide a triage service and clinical interventions, recognising environmental limitations and the need for appropriate referral, assessment and transfer of patients who require care within wider NHS provision.

Respond to healthcare emergencies within the prison in accordance with the Trust's and Local policies and procedures.

Maintain accurate healthcare records and handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

Deliver evidence-based care and seek specialist advice from other Healthcare professionals both internal and external.

Act as a named nurse for patients with specialist or complex health needs

Provide nurse-led clinics in the healthcare centre, residential units or other suitable settings.

To provide basic leadership to junior staff by maintaining professional standards ensuring adherence to all relevant policies and procedures to ensure the delivery of high-quality care.

To identify patients who could be at risk of self-harm and escalate appropriately and respect patients individuality and maintain their privacy and dignity within the constraints of the secure environment.
