Job summary

The role of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation/Electroconvulsive Therapy Practitioner is integrated within the newly established Nottingham Neuromodulation Unit at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. The post holder will work alongside the a diverse MDT to deliver treatment and develop the service to be a centre of excellence.

Open to all registered nurses and AHPs.

The post is a 9 months fixed term contract initially following a successful research trial which examined the efficacy, mechanism of action and patient acceptability of connectivity (neuroimaging) guided, intermittent theta-burst Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (cgiTBS) in comparison with standard rTMS, in treatment resistant moderate to severe depression. Subject to a successful business case evidencing treatment efficacy and patient experience further funding for a permanent service may be made available.

The service is part of the Adult Mental Health directorate of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, but will deliver treatment to all service users of the Trust for whom these interventions are the appropriate clinical treatment option

Main duties of the job

The TMS/ECT Practitioner will be responsible for the safe administration of TMS/ECT under the direction of a consultant psychiatrist or the TMS/ECT clinical lead, and all other associated duties as described In the Job description. They will demonstrate enthusiasm and positive attitude to working in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation/Electro convulsive therapy.

This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of £2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period. This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust. This post also includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during night, weekends and bank holidays.

To explain and safely administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment to patients with treatment resistant depression under the direction of a consultant psychiatrist.

To explain and safely administer Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) treatment to patients with treatment resistant depression under the direction of a consultant psychiatrist

To initiate follow up treatment for established patients independently.

To fulfil duties of the role with enthusiasm and have positive attitude to working in TMS/ECT services.

To record patients physical observations (pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) before, during and after TMS/ECT treatment.

To coordinate the booking of TMS/ECT treatment sessions in coordination with the patient, and members of the clinical team.

To monitor patients for adverse effects before, during and after receiving TMS/ECT treatment.

To provide medical interventions in an emergency situation including management of seizure and syncope.

To address any patient discomfort.

To ensure that TMS/ECT equipment is safely positioned and maintained in line with the trust polices.

To maintain patient confidentiality and treat patients with dignity and respect.

To follow established TMS/ECT protocols and clinical governance procedures.

To communicate effectively with the TMS/ECT Clinical Lead and other members of the team locally and other sites.

To maintain a high degree of precision regarding TMS/ECT administration, in terms of localisation of stimulation site, safe administration and patient monitoring.
