Job description

Job responsibilities

The Service works 24/7 365 days a year. Consultant input to the Team is Monday-Friday 9.00am-5.00pm with cover from the on call rota. The Service has been PLAN accredited since October 2011 and there will be an expectation to maintain and improve our PLAN accreditation level. The Service covers a large Acute teaching hospital, Nottingham University Hospitals Trust at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham City Hospital and Lings Bar Hospital.

The successful candidate would support the whole MDT by providing clinical leadership to the team and assessing, treating and following patients up as appropriate. We see the Consultants in the Team as senior clinicians who are consulted on complex cases and support the team in a flexible fashion. Each day and week is different in how this is best achieved but to summarise; the Department of Psychological Medicine is a very busy liaison psychiatry department in a large acute teaching hospital trust (Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust). The MDT team together sees approximately 390 new referrals per month and offers follow up appointments where appropriate. The service covers a teaching hospital with a current bed base of 1650 on split sites and approximately 550 ED attendances a day. Patients can be referred from the ED or any ward in the hospital. We also offer an outpatient service for complex liaison patients (such as mixed medical and psychiatric and Medically unexplained symptoms patients amongst others). The current case load of the Consultants in the team is an average of 50-60 patients.

Continuing Professional Development is highly valued within the Trust and the post holder will be required to have an annual statement of CPD from the Royal College. To support this requirement the Trust offers an annual budget of £1,200 per Consultant and 10 days of study leave per year. SPAs are also included in Consultants job plans to support this.

New Consultants are fully supported through the buddying scheme and New Consultants Retreat.

The Trust is committed to supporting research. The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is a partnership between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Nottingham and brings together the healthcare and education sectors to achieve Research Excellence for Innovation. The IMH currently receives approximately £34 million pounds in external research grants and is one of the UKs prime locations for interdisciplinary research in mental health. It has 8 Centres of Excellence including the Centre for ADHD and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Across the Lifespan (CANDAL) and Centre for Mood Disorders.

Nottingham is a great place to live and work:

  • Home of English Sport;
  • UNESCO city of literature;
  • Home to the worlds oldest Football Club, Englands oldest Inn (Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem) and Robin Hood;
  • Culture & Architecture: Wollaton Hall, Newstead Abbey (Lord Byrons residence), National Justice Museum, Nottingham Trent University Arkwright building;
  • Entertainment: Nottingham Playhouse, Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall; Nottingham Ice Arena, The Albert Hall, Michelin starred restaurants;
  • Excellent education;
  • Excellent transport links.

Our ethos is simple; we want you to be part of our professional team delivering excellent patient care whilst experiencing a fulfilling career.
