Job summary

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation trust were at the forefront of a recent successful research study into the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation as a treatment for depression

We have now been offered the opportunity to further develop and evaluate this service offer over a 12-month period, allowing the development of patient outcome measures, the development of the treatment offer and of a business case for future service provision and funding.

If you are a mental health professional with experience of working with those with mood disorders and a passion to work across agencies to develop new and forward research-based services, then this role could be the one for you

Main duties of the job

The Successful candidate will support the clinical leadership and development of the TMS service key qualities and experience required include

  • Significant experience working with those with severe mental health difficulties and a strong understanding of treatment pathways for those with depression
  • The ability to work with a wide variety of professional including some who do not work for the organization and being able to manage competing priorities accordingly
  • A passion for understanding patient experience and developing and implementing outcome measures
  • The ability to support the development of a business case evidencing the impact and outcomes of the service over the initial 12-month period

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To lead the operational development of the newly established Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) service based at Queens Medical Centre Nottingham and support the ECT service based at Queens medical Centre Nottingham.
  • To be direct line manager for other staff working in the TMS/ECT service.
  • To manage the budget for TMS services.
  • To lead on recruitment for any new roles developed within the TMS service.
  • To explain and safely administer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment to patients with treatment resistant depression under the direction of a Consultant Psychiatrist.
  • To initiate follow up treatment for established patients independently.
  • To fulfil duties of the role with enthusiasm and have positive attitude to working in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation services.
  • To record patients physical observations (pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) before, during and after TMS treatment.
  • To coordinate the booking of all TMS treatment sessions in coordination with the patient, members of the research team and staff within the imaging facility.
  • To monitor patients for adverse effects before, during and after receiving TMS treatment.
  • To provide medical interventions in an emergency situation including management of seizure and syncope.
  • To address any patient discomfort.
  • To ensure that TMS equipment is safely positioned and maintained in line with the Trust polices.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality and treat patients with dignity and respect.
  • To follow established TMS protocols and clinical governance procedures.
  • To communicate effectively with the TMS Clinical Lead and other members of the research team locally and other sites.
  • To maintain a high degree of precision regarding TMS administration, in terms of localisation of stimulation site, safe administration and patient monitoring.
  • To support the Consultant psychiatrist lead and the Business and performance manager to develop evaluation and feedback structures for the TMS service to allow the measurement of outcomes and impact.
  • To support in the development of future business cases with regard to ongoing service provision.
  • To support the development and delivery of research associated activities relating to TMS.
  • To ensure supervision and oversight of supplies and essential equipment in the department including procurement and stock management.
  • To manage referrals from other provider organisations including private providers.

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent relevant experience in mental health nursing, psycology, or neuroscience
  • Masters degree in related subject or additional postgraduate training/experience up to master's degree equivalent
  • Highly relevant and specialist theoretical and practical knowledge underpinned by current evidence-based practice including broad range of assessments and treatments relevant to specialist patient group and extensive knowledge of a range of appropriate specialist therapeutic interventions
