Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Home Talk Worker to work with young children and their families in the child's home environment under the supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist .

A Home Talk Worker is required to fill a full-time vacancy across our Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) contract in the City and county-wide Nottinghamshire County Council contract

Fixed Term contract until 31st December 2022 in the first instance, with the likelihood of the contract being extended.

Full and part time/job share applications considered.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our well-established Home Talk Team. You will join the Specialist and Children and Young People's Directorate within Nottinghamshire Healthcare as part of our Early Intervention Speech and Language Team.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced children's worker to develop their skills and expertise in the area of language development with very young children, working in in the child's home environment under the supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist.

7 sessions (26.25 Hours) of the role are in the Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) project. SSBC is part of A Better Start, a 10 year National Lottery funded programme focused on promoting good early childhood development.

The work of our Early Intervention Speech and Language Team contributes to one of its key aims: to help children develop their language and communication skills, so that they can engage with the world around them. As part of the SSBC partnership, we offer a range of services for children who live in Small Steps Big Changes wards from birth up to their4th birthday. We believe in working in partnership with families and other services, in developing high quality services for everyone who needs them, and in learning and improving every day.

There are also 3 sessions (11.25 hours) in our well-established Home Talk programme commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council,

Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this role are

  • To monitor the Home Talk waiting list and independently book in home talk visits so as to keep within waiting time limits, reporting any capacity issues to the speech and language therapist.
  • To work independently in family homes and community settings, with supervision from a speech and language therapist (SLT) to provide the Home Talk package for families of young children who have been identified as at risk of language delay.
  • To visit families at home to support them in developing a communication-friendly home environment and in providing opportunities for children to develop their language in everyday situations, recognising the parent as the childs key educator.
  • To ensure that at all times the worker adheres to Nottinghamshire Safeguarding Childrens Board policies and procedures
  • To support families to access other childrens centre and community activities that will support their childs development as well as other opportunities that may be useful for parents themselves.
  • To be able to identify and implement appropriate actions during/at the end of the home talk package in liaison with the SLT, including any onward referrals.
  • To work collaboratively as part of multi disciplinary teams ensuring a well co-ordinated care plan.
  • To implement policies, procedures and act within professional standards

Essential Criteria;

  • Recognised Level 3 qualification in Early Years
  • Experience and Training in Safeguarding, Early Years Foundation Stage and Universal level Speech, Language and Communication Training, preferably Notts Language for Life.
  • Experience of working with parents, very young children and in communication friendly environments
  • Well motivated team worker
  • Full driving licence and ability to drive across Nottinghamshire as required within the role
