An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to lead our specialist palliative care services at Bassetlaw Hospice.
Working for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust this newly developed post will join an established team of Consultants in Palliative Medicine and specifically take leadership or our six bedded unit in Retford, Nottinghamshire. Providing direction and medical oversight to a workforce that includes two Advanced Clinical Practitioners, a community clinical nurse specialist team and outpatient clinics and day services this role gives a fantastic opportunity to shape services for the local population. As part of an established team this role will also work and receive peer support through our wider services at John Eastwood Hospice in Mansfield.

Main duties of the job
- Deliver consultant level day-to-day medical care to hospice in-patients and patients accessing other Specialist Palliative Care services.
- Provide clinical leadership, education and development to the Advanced Clinical Practitioners
- Provide leadership and participate as a member at the weekly in-patient multidisciplinary team meeting.
- Out-of-hours responsibilities for Bassetlaw and John Eastwood Hospices, including participation in the medical on call rota.
- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
- Any responsibility which relates to a special interest.
- Educational and clinical supervision of trainee doctors, advanced clinical practitioners and supervision of Specialty Doctors.
- Training and supervision of Nurse Independent Prescribers.
- To participate in education and training junior doctors, medical students, hospice staff and volunteers.
- Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement projects and the Trusts clinical governance processes.
- Support research activity.
- Comply with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as stipulated by the Royal Colleges.
- To keep a portfolio of evidence, to have an annual appraisal and write a personal development plan (PDP) in line with GMC revalidation policies and procedures.
- Support and assist in the achievement of Trust objectives.
- Work with the trust and commissioners on the development of Specialist Palliative Care and End of Life Care service.

The post is based at primarily at Bassetlaw Hospice in Retford. Bassetlaw Hospice forms part of the Specialist Palliative Care Portfolio for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The Hospice reopened as a fully refurbished modern unit in Spring 2020 providing 6 inpatient beds and day service and outpatient facilities. The Hospice benefits from extensive office space and teaching and board room facilities. The Hospice provides specialist support to the local population of around 120,000 people. A comprehensive range of services are provided by a skilled and committed workforce of staff and volunteers. Clinical services are available 24/7. The post forms part of the wider body of Consultants in Palliative Medicine and will work across John Eastwood Hospice in Sutton in Ashfield with shared services.
Bassetlaw and John Eastwood Hospices are an NHS service; the employer for the post is Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and services are provided by the Community Health Services Division. The commissioning groups have a very strong commitment to develop palliative care services for the area. The Hospice was purpose built with charitable money, but is entirely run by the NHS. The building continues to be owned by the Bassetlaw Hospice Charitable Trust, with whom we have an excellent relationship. The partnership with the charity has allowed expansion of services and extension to the building.
North Nottinghamshire and Bassetlaw is an attractive area that surrounds Sherwood Forest with a number of country parks in close access. The City of Sheffield is about 20 miles to the west and Nottingham is about 25 miles to the south, both with major shopping and entertainment facilities. Communications are excellent, with the M1 a few miles to the west, the East Coast Main rail line along and the A1 to the east. Doncaster Airport is approximately 30 minutes away on the M1.
Continuing Professional Development is highly valued within the Trust and the post holder will be required to have an annual statement of CPD from the Royal College. To support this requirement the Trust offers an annual budget of £1,200 per Consultant and 10 days of study leave per year. SPAs are also included in Consultants job plans to support this.
New Consultants are fully supported through the buddying scheme and New Consultants Retreat.
The Trust is committed to supporting research and the department of Specialist Palliative Care has a vibrant and diverse research portfolio led by Consultant with support of two research nurses. Current study contribution includes Methylphenidate Versus Placebo for Fatigue in Advanced Cancer trial ( MePFAC), the adoption of the Guide to Action for Care Homes programme for use in hospices and as a test site for the CHELsea II Clinicaly-assisted Hydration at End of Life trial..
