Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the well established and respected Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Service as part of the LSCF Directorate with links to the Intellectual and Developmental Disability Services, Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. The post holder will be based in the Community Forensic Teams and will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team supporting peole with intellectual disability / Autism Spectrum Disorder.

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting people with intellectual disabilities / autism and will be responsible for contributing to the identification of speech, langauge and communication needs of individual supported and highlightling the reasonable adjustments to be made through formulation, treatment planning and risk management. You will equally contribute to the capacity and capabilities of the staff team with regard to communication issues.

Main duties of the job

The role requires a high level of clinical and professional expertise in order that adults with speech, language and communication needs and benefit from a well co-ordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service within the designated setting. The service includes individual assessment, therapy and management, training, advice and liaison through a consultative approach.

You must hold a relevant degree in Speech and Language Therapy and be registered with RCSLT and HCPC (applied for registration).

Job responsibilities

CFIDD is a small Multi Disciplinary team who are highly motivated and passionate about enabling service users to thrive in the community.

Team members were shortlisted as finalists for the Nursing Times Award 2020 after developing an educational package that was adapted to meet the needs of individuals with communication difficulties who are subject to restriction orders under the Mental Health Act. The aim of the package was to support individuals who were discharged from an inpatient setting, to understand their legal framework in the community.

You will be well supported and supervised by a Lead SLT, with many opportunities for peer support. You will enjoy close links with our team and our SLT colleagues within the East Midlands, and benefit from excellent levels of support, supervision, IT and CPD opportunities.

Clinical Practice

  • To independently provide a specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment, intervention and advice service to people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs and / or physical disabilities with communication including families, support staff and professionals where relevant.
  • To develop and provide highly specialist packages of care to individuals
  • To work as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team across a variety of agencies and locations in order to maximise communication opportunities for service users
  • To be responsible for the mentoring, supervision and management of junior speech and language therapists and assistant speech and language therapists
  • To have a delegated responsibility for a specific specialism, providing highly specialist advise and support and second opinions for people with additional needs or in specific contexts, plus their communication difficulties- for example communication aids, PMLD, sensory impairment, dementia, , learning and development, assessment and treatment services, Criminal Justice issues.
