Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil Site, is looking to appoint a Clinical Teaching Fellow in General Surgery (CT1/CT2 equivalent) on a 12 month fixed term contract from 5th August 2026 to 4th August 2026.
This is a full time, 40 hours per week position, working Monday to Friday from 08:00 - 17:00.
The Clinical Teaching Fellow in General Surgery will split their time between clinical duties within the surgical department (3 days per week) and medical education activities focused on teaching resident doctors (2 days per week). (60:40 split)
This role aims to enhance resident doctor education while maintaining clinical competency in surgery.
This post is not recognised by the Royal Colleges for general, specialist or vocational professional training.
Main duties of the job
Primarily the teaching will be delivered to postgraduate doctors (Foundation).
The post will be divided 60:40 full time equivalent between the department of -surgery and medical education respectively
You will be integral to the medical education team and provide teaching sessions including case-based learning, bedside teaching, clinical skills and simulation.
Your teaching duties are designed to increase your experience in Medical Education and assist your career development. This post is designed to nurture staff so that they can get involved with teaching and progress along a clinical academic route should they wish and is ideally suited for applicants on completion of foundation training or taking a year out from specialist training.
You will act as a mentor for post graduate doctors, take a role in pastoral care such as identification of "at risk" doctors, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help. You will work closely with the medical education team in delivering this.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to undertake the Certificate in Medical Education with the University of Bristol's Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme, which will be funded, during their tenure of the posts. If the post holder has completed a certificate in medical education prior to appointment, further opportunities may be offered with agreement of the Director of Medical Education.
