Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an ST4+ Clinical Teaching Fellow in Emergency Medicine to join the Emergency Department at Musgrove Park Hospital. This role offers a 50/50 split between Emergency Medicine clinical duties and undergraduate teaching for Peninsula Medical School (Years 3--5).

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior trainee to further develop middlegrade clinical skills in a busy and supportive ED that sees around 90,000 attendances annually, with 25% paediatric cases and Trauma Unit designation. Alongside clinical development, the role offers significant experience in teaching, simulation, assessment and student support, with access to purposebuilt educational facilities at Musgrove Park Academy.

You will join a team of nine Clinical Teaching Fellows and benefit from a funded PGCert in Medical Education (up to 4,000), free Simulation "Training the Trainers" course, regular departmental teaching and a strong culture of audit, governance and professional development.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities (50%)

Work as a middle grade doctor on the ED rota alongside ST3-6 colleagues.

Assess, examine and manage a full range of emergency presentations, including major trauma and life threatening illness.

Provide supervision and support to F1, F2, ST1-2 and GPVTS doctors.

Lead the management of complex or multi injury patients when required.

Participate in a full shift rota including evenings, weekends and nights (to balance sociable hours teaching commitments).

Work in a department with consultant presence from 08:00 to midnight daily, with additional senior support overnight.

Contribute to departmental governance, audit and quality improvement.

Teaching Responsibilities (50%)

Deliver weekly induction, bedside teaching, clinical skills assessments and informal mentoring for PMS Years 3-5 students.

Teach simulation based education, tutorials and skills based sessions within the Musgrove Park Academy facilities.

Contribute to high quality placements and work closely within a supportive team of CTFs.

Education, Training and Professional Development

Undertake a funded University of Plymouth Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education .

Access a free place on the Simulation "Training the Trainers" course.

Attend weekly middle grade ED teaching and monthly CTF teaching sessions.

Receive educational supervision and participate in Trust appraisal.

Contribute to intradepartmental, Trust wide and national audits as part of a strong clinical governance culture.
