Job summary
We are seeking a motivated Band 4 Nursing Associate to join our PeriOperative Service at Somerset FT to cover maternity leave for 12 months.
In this role, you will support safe, efficient surgical care by identifying patients who require perioperative optimisation, coordinating key preoperative investigations, and ensuring results and followups are completed on time. You will manage a defined caseload, maintaining accurate documentation and providing clear, compassionate communication with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will undertake coordination, monitoring, and documentation tasks within the Nursing Associate scope of practice. You will help reduce delays, streamline patient pathways, and contribute to service improvement initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an evolving perioperative pathway and make a meaningful impact on patient experience and elective surgery flow.
The successful applicant will be based largely at Yeovil District Hospital, but may also be required to work elsewhere.

Main duties of the job
Identify patients who require perioperative optimisation and escalate any complex or unclear presentations.
Coordinate preoperative investigations (e.g., blood tests, ECGs), ensuring they are completed on time and resolving delays.
Check investigation results are available across clinical systems and escalate abnormal findings promptly.
Monitor patients awaiting surgery, arranging followup tests and acting on concerns without delay.
Maintain accurate, timely documentation in electronic records and pathway tracking tools.
Communicate clearly with patients, carers and the multidisciplinary team to support smooth progression through the pathway.
Work safely within the Nursing Associate scope, contributing to incident reporting, audits and qualityimprovement activity.
Support pathway development by highlighting delays, issues and opportunities for improvement.
Manage a personal caseload in line with protocols, seeking registered nurse support when required.
Contribute to positive teamworking and assist with orientating new colleagues.
