The closing date is 16 May 2025

Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) in Acute Medicine to join the team at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. This exciting hybrid post offers a unique opportunity to combine clinical practice with undergraduate teaching, ideal for doctors at ST4+ level who are passionate about both patient care and medical education.

The post is split equally:

50% Clinical: Working at senior level within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), you will manage acutely unwell patients, participate in ward and board rounds, supervise junior staff, and contribute to quality improvement and clinical governance. There are no out-of-hours commitments.

50% Teaching: Delivering high-quality education to 3rd--5th year students from Peninsula Medical School, you will provide bedside teaching, skills assessments, feedback, and mentorship. You will also support the development of teaching materials and student projects.

This is an ideal role for those looking to strengthen clinical and teaching portfolios, prepare for specialty training, or explore a career in medical education. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Somerset, this role also offers an excellent quality of life in a progressive and supportive NHS trust.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities (50%)

  • Participate in ward rounds on AMU and SDEC at ST4+ level, both independently and under senior supervision.
  • Review and manage deteriorating patients and supervise junior team members.
  • Perform and oversee procedures such as lumbar punctures.
  • Support the clinical team in board rounds and multidisciplinary care planning.
  • Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement projects.
  • No out-of-hours or on-call duties required.

  • Provide orientation sessions, bedside teaching, skills assessments, and structured feedback.
  • Mentor students and contribute to their pastoral care.
  • Develop and improve teaching materials and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with fellow Clinical Teaching Fellows and support the Student Selected Component (SSC).
  • Encourage and supervise quality improvement projects for students.

If you are passionate about medical education and looking to develop both your teaching and clinical skills, we encourage you to apply!
