Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, Yeovil Site, is looking to appoint 2 Clinical Teaching Fellows in Trauma and Orthopaedics and Medical Education (ST1/2 Equivalent) both on 12 month fixed term contracts from 6th August 2025 to 5th August 2026

These are full time, 40 hours per week positions, working Monday to Sunday on a full shit with on call.

The post holders will work a rolling rota of 2 weeks in Medical Education and 2 weeks in Orthopaedics. (50%50 spilt)

This post is not recognised by the Royal Colleges for general, specialist or vocational professional training.

Main duties of the job

You will be integral to the undergraduate medical education team and provide teaching sessions including case-based learning, bedside teaching, clinical skills and simulation to students from years 2 to 5 in the programme.

These posts primarily focus on providing teaching within the following areas of clinical practice: trauma and orthopaedics, urgent and emergency care in general medicine and general surgery, vascular surgery, anaesthetics and critical care, dermatology, ophthalmology, ear nose and throat. However, there is expectation for cross cover the work of other fellows on a collaborative basis.

Your teaching duties are designed to increase your experience in Medical Education and assist your career development. This post is designed to nurture staff so that they can get involved with teaching and progress along a clinical academic route should they wish and is ideally suited for applicants on completion of foundation training or taking a year out from specialist training.

You will act as a mentor for students. Take a role in student pastoral care such as identification of "at risk" students and dysfunctional groups, offering support and referral to appropriate sources of help. You will work closely with consultant tutors, lead CTF for wellbeing and the academy deans in ensuring pastoral care and academic progression of the students.

Job description

Job responsibilities

These posts are specifically at Yeovil District Hospital and offer the opportunity to be involved in the education of medical students as part of an already established programme provided by associated Universities.

Primarily the teaching will be delivered to undergraduates from the University of Bristol Medical School, of which approximately 70 students are placed in the acute hospital.

To allow the post-holder to continue their clinical development each post will be divided equally (50:50 full time equivalent) between undergraduate medical education and trauma and orthopaedics. The rota is usually constructed in a 2-week rotation between clinical commitments and the undergraduate department.

Key topics covered within this post include emergency care, trauma, orthopaedics, and ENT. Although the post holder would be expected to cross cover other elements of the programme as necessary.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake the Certificate in Medical Education with the University of Bristol's Teaching and Learning for Health Professionals programme, which will be funded, during their tenure of the posts. If the post holder has completed a certificate in medical education prior to appointment, further opportunities may be offered with agreement of the Academy Dean.

Support for submission of posters / presentations relating to work undertaken during this role is available. CTFs have a study leave allowance 30 days plus a centralised budget. It is expected that post holders split their study leave entitlement between their clinical and educational roles. It should be noted that a minimum of 7 study leave days are utilised to attend in person taught days for the PG certificate course.

Each post holder will have associate status with the University of Bristol and all offered a Trust Appraisal in keeping with revalidation.

Clinical Roles and Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for the admission, clerking and day to day care of patients on the Orthopaedic wards and any outlying wards as required.

You will attend daily trauma meetings, ward rounds, clinics and operating sessions as required.

The post holder will rotate through the elective ward, trauma ward, theatres and take part in the Hospital@Night rotation covering both Orthopaedics and General Surgery.

To participate in audits and current research projects. These are available through individual Consultants.

To attend the active postgraduate programme with weekly lectures, radiology, medical and pathology meetings and medical unit presentations.

To contribute to the active journal club. There are 'bleep-free' obligatory sessions for teaching and these are part of the weekly timetable.

To participate in the teaching of Foundation Doctors at the bedside as well as to Medical Students.

To maintain a good working relationship with existing staff members in the hospital.

To perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate Consultant in conjunction, where practicable, with their colleagues both senior and junior.
