Job summary

This is a 12 month, fixed-term post to work full-time in a position within the Surgical Department and will include registrar level on-call, currently on a 1:8 rota At Yeovil and a 1:10 at Taunton with prospective cover (covering general surgery alongside urology and vascular cover with support from consultants who may be based at Yeovil Hospital [Urology only]). This may be subject to change in line with EWTD working regulations. There is an established ambulatory care service with dedicated sessions to support this alongside the on-call team. The candidate will have exposure to advanced laparoscopic colorectal (for cancer and benign conditions), complex hernia, benign upper GI, breast and general paediatric surgery. Robotic surgery has been introduced across the trust and they may be exposed to these cases to assist. They will partake in surgical clinics and will be responsible for the care of surgical patients on the ward, supporting the more junior members of the surgical team and working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team members involved with care of surgical patients.

Being able to manage time effectively and support the ward surgical team to complete tasks efficiently and in a timely manner to aid care of the surgical patients.

The rota is usually available 6 weeks in advance but there will be an expectation for flexible working to cover emerging needs within the department (eg sickness).

This post will have responsibility for supervising and supporting the surgical ward team in the day-to-day management of the elective and emergency surgical patients. When on-call this will require leadership and management of the workforce to see the emergency patients in a timely manner, institute the necessary initial management and investigations (including operating on them) and escalate to seniors as necessary.
