Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic pharmacist to join the pharmacy team in our friendly and forward thinking department. The post represents a great opportunity for ambitious pharmacists to progress their career in a clinically focused and innovative environment. We welcome pharmacists who want to help create and deliver a high quality medicines optimisation service for our patients.

We encourage applications from trainee pharmacists due to register after completing the GPhC assessment in August 2024, newly qualified pharmacists and qualified pharmacists from other sectors who are interested in expanding their practice into hospital. We would be open to recruiting pharmacists who are looking for flexible working patterns or part time.

For new registrants, the Trust will pay the first year of your GPhC registration fees. A relocation payment of up to £7,700 may be available for those relocating to the area.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will join our friendly team of rotational pharmacists and will gain experience in all areas of pharmacy and clinical services. We provide rotations through medicine (cardiology, respiratory, endocrinology, gastroenterology, stroke and frailty), surgery, acute admissions and paediatrics.

Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust merged with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust in April 2023 and as a combined Trust we provide clinical pharmacy services to two acute hospitals, specialist mental health units and community hospitals across Somerset. This is a great opportunity to develop clinical skills in a wide variety of settings and to work alongside pharmacists specialising in these areas.

You will be supported by our team of senior pharmacists (including independent prescribers) and by accredited medicines optimisation technicians and assistants.

Your training opportunities will be further supported through the opportunity to undertake a fully funded Clinical Pharmacy Diploma (including independent prescribing qualification). We also support our newly qualified pharmacists by offering the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through completion of the Newly Qualified Pharmacist Pathway with HEE.

About us

Yeovil District Hospital is a small district general hospital with a full range of acute specialities. Pharmacy is a strong cohesive team of individuals with a positive culture and a strong focus on health and wellbeing. Over recent years, the department has built a reputation for advanced clinical services through a commitment to staff development, education and training, and investment in digital support. The Trust has funding for an Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system due to be implemented during 2024.

The clinical pharmacy team provides a full medicines optimisation service throughout the Trust and to a local hospice. We also supply medicines to community hospitals across Somerset and to mental health units in the county (including clozapine). Pharmacy enjoys excellent IT support and has recently undergone a full refurbishment including the installation of a new dispensing robot. We have a busy Aseptic Services Unit producing chemotherapy and have a significant involvement in the provision of clinical trials. Our key strengths as a department are that we work hard for each other and training is at the core of everything we do.

On site accommodation is available if required.
