Job summary

Main duties of the job

  • Middle grade doctors in Obstetrics & Gynaecology are second on-call (resident within the hospital) for emergencies in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Labour Ward, and as such will take on the responsibilities associated with this role. You are also attached to specific consultants
  • The middle grade doctor will be expected to work closely with the consultant and seek help and advice when necessary in the management of more complex cases.
  • Perform instrumental and operative deliveries, or supervise the junior doctors to do this if appropriate
  • Manage third stage complications
  • Be able to manage maternal collapse and neonatal resuscitation
  • Have input into the management of high risk pregnancies in conjunction with the Consultant Obstetrician
  • Supervise the junior doctors working on the Delivery Suite
  • Attend the antenatal clinics of the Obstetricians in their team which may include one of the more specialised maternal medicine clinics

Job responsibilities

Delivery Unit: The Specialty Grade Doctor will work under the supervision of the Consultant Obstetrician on call for Delivery Suite. The Specialty Grade Doctor will:

  • Specialty Doctors must have a minimum of 4 years experience since qualification, 2 of which must be in the relevant specialty
  • Middle grade doctors in Obstetrics & Gynaecology are second on-call (resident within the hospital) for emergencies in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Labour Ward, and as such will take on the responsibilities associated with this role. You are also attached to specific consultants
  • The middle grade doctor will be expected to work closely with the consultant and seek help and advice when necessary in the management of more complex cases.
  • Work in conjunction with the senior Midwife
  • Be responsible for the monitoring of fetal condition in labour
  • Assess and manage abnormal progress of labour
  • Perform instrumental and operative deliveries, or supervise the junior doctors to do this if appropriate
  • Manage third stage complications
  • Be able to manage maternal collapse and neonatal resuscitation
  • Have input into the management of high risk pregnancies in conjunction with the Consultant Obstetrician
  • Supervise the junior doctors working on the Delivery Suite
  • Be aware of the wishes and fears of women in labour, and respect
