Job summary

Are you passionate about making a positive impact on people's lives? Do you thrive on providing support and guidance to help individuals manage and overcome psychological challenges? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!

We are currently looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic Practitioner Psychologist, to join our team for an initial 12-month fixed term contract, working 30 hours per week, to cover a colleague's maternity leave. However, it is possible that this contract will subsequently be extended and made permanent, should a suitable candidate be found.

At the Somerset Community Pain Management Service (SCPMS), we are dedicated to transforming lives through compassionate care. Our team is committed to providing innovative and effective solutions for individuals dealing with pain-related challenges.

The Somerset Community Pain Management Service (SCPMS) is based at Dene Barton Community Hospital in Taunton but offers virtual (telephone and video) and face-to-face support, to residents living across Somerset.

The aim of the service is to empower people with persistent pain to develop their understanding, skills and confidence, to live a full and meaningful life. This is achieved within the service, through offering a range of individual and group interventions. We also work in close collaboration with other local services, to ensure that people receive integrated care that meets their physical, emotional and social needs.

Main duties of the job

The Somerset Community Pain Management Service comprises a small, friendly and supportive multidisciplinary team, consisting of Anaesthetists, Specialist Nurses, a Physiotherapist and team of Psychologists, all of whom are supported by their own administration team.

At Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, staff are supported in developing a Job Plan, attending annual career conversations and accessing relevant career professional development opportunities. You'll also receive monthly supervision from a Principal Clinical Psychologist and will be invited to attend a bi-monthly reflective supervision group, with other members of the multidisciplinary team.

The SCPMS has a good working relationship with local training courses and provides regular placements and research opportunities for Trainee Clinical Psychologists and MSc Health Psychology students which will give you the chance to take an active role in helping to supervise and support psychology students and Assistant Psychologists, where appropriate.

This post will be based at Dene Barton Community Hospital in Taunton, but the role will involve remote working, as well as travel between different clinics, currently held in Taunton, Bridgwater and Wincanton.

About us

As an organisation, the NHS offers a wide range of benefits including flexible working, pension contributions, market leading annual leave allowance, continuing professional development and regular informal conversations around career progression, annual recognition awards to celebrate and recognise our colleagues achievements throughout the year and not to mention our Blue Light Card and NHS exclusive discounts.

We work hard to make sure that inclusion is part of everything we do. We know that true inclusion means we're able to provide the best care for our patients and provide a fulfilling career for all our colleagues.

The benefits of working in Somerset include the idyllic countryside, with our areas of outstanding beauty and stunning coastlines. You will get to enjoy these perks whilst still only being a stone's throw away from bustling city centres like Bristol, Bath and Exeter and only two hours away from London - there is truly something for everyone!

There are excellent educational facilities in the area and, when compared to other regions, house prices are reasonable.

We have six active and impactful colleague networks. These networks provide a safe space for colleagues to share their experiences and learn from one another, but also influence change across our trust:

  • Multicultural Network
  • Women's Network
  • Armed Forces' Network
  • LGBTQ+ Network
  • Lived Experience Network, for colleagues living with disabilities
  • Autistic Colleague Network
