Job summary

Be the Trust Professional Topic Lead and Advisor for Waste Management and related services.

Oversee (including supplier), waste management systems and services and work with internal and external stakeholders, to ensure that they provide; or are enabled to provide; continuous Legal, Regulatory or other relevant waste management compliance.

Advise the Trust of any changes to waste, environmental and other relevant legislation, Regulations or best practice, as they relate to Trust waste management services.

Main duties of the job

Develop a positive dialogue and technical working relationships with waste management colleagues from other NHS organisations including NHSE.

Attend, Contribute and Deputise for the DHOF as Chair of the Trust Waste Management Group.Work with service leads and operational managers to understand their services, their waste management and related requirements and any challenges presenting themselves.

Work closely with the Head of Sustainability to ensure waste management services support the Trust's sustainability goals and ambitions.

Work closely with the SFM Service Improvement Manager and other stakeholders to develop the use of technology and software solutions and the collection of performance data for waste management and related services.

Develop professional working relationships with waste management and other relevant vendors.

Attend relevant meetings, seminars and presentations etc. within the NHS and/or external service providers and expand your network with professional colleagues, bodies, providers and advisors.

Ensure reports/findings are prepared, collated and presented relevant to their audience and these are effectively communicated using various mediums.

Organise and/or attend meetings/workshops etc., deliver briefings and provide training sessions to raise awareness, educate and gather support for waste management and related services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Act as the Trust Topic Lead and expert on all matters relating to waste management and related activities.

Ensure that the trust Waste management Policy is implemented across trust sites.In consultation with relevant stakeholders, be responsible for updating the Trust Waste Management and related Policies and documents and ensure that a valid, in-date policy is continuously in effect.

In consultation with relevant stakeholders (including the DGSA), be responsible for updating the Trust Movement of Dangerous Goods Policy and related documents and ensure that a valid, in-date policy is continuously in effect.

Comply with all relevant SFT Policies and Procedures and ensure any personal work activity supports these Policies and Procedures.

Work with the DHOF/Head of Facilities to develop, amend or revise Policy or other documents.

In consultation with internal stakeholders, create or have created by others, relevant and meaningful Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that reflects compliance with relevant legislation, regulations or agreed best practice.

Working with other stakeholders, undertake reviews of waste management and related services including (but not exhaustively) the use of labour resources, plant, equipment, materials, finances, software, communications, supervision or management. Report (or jointly report) on findings and propose cost improvements and/or solutions to any issues identified.

Ensure that all waste is stored in appropriate containers and/or compounds and these are periodically inspected for compliance with statutory requirements and any corrective actions are taken promptly.

Ensure clear and adequate waste streams exist for the correct disposal of all SFT generated waste and that clear and updated SOPs exist for the same.

Work with the SFT Catering teams (and others) to formulate systems to measure, control and report food miles and minimise food wastage in compliance with the NHS National Food & Drink Plan.

Actively review and propose changes to own working practices and procedures in use by others.

Develop business cases (with costs) and reports to justify, request and secure investment in new software, systems, equipment or services, presenting the same to senior colleagues as requested.

Ensure that waste management and related services are adequately considered and represented in relevant Trust and EFM policy documents.

Assist in the development of KPIs and use KPIs to measure service, system, contractor, supplier and vendor performance.
