Job summary

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS providers, delivering joined up community, mental health and acute hospital care. We are looking to appoint a Healthcare Scientist, to lead the development and delivery of healthcare science across the Somerset health system.

Healthcare scientists are involved in 80% of clinical decisions and diagnostics in the NHS, across more than 50 different specialisms. The person appointed will be a leading voice in setting strategic direction and promoting the role of healthcare science. With a degree in an associated healthcare science discipline, preferably at Masters level and extensive experience, the successful candidate will possess the skills and abilities necessary for this challenging and rewarding role.

We would like to encourage candidates who are looking to develop and who may not be immediately ready to take on the full extent of the role. To support this, the post can be offered as a developmental role as an 8C, with a clear development pathway to 8D.

Main duties of the job

The Lead Healthcare Scientist will be the lead for all the healthcare science disciplines across the Trust and Somerset ICS. They will be a leading voice in setting strategic direction and promoting the role of healthcare scientists across Somerset.

They will set and maintain professional standards for all healthcare scientists in SFT and be responsible for the quality and effectiveness of Trust diagnostic services within the healthcare science remit. If concerns are raised about service quality or professional standards, they will ensure there is an appropriate and proportionate response, in line with the Trusts values and learning culture. The post holder will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer and will work alongside the Medical Directors in the Medical Leadership Team. They will also have a dotted reporting line to the Chief Medical Officer at the Integrated Care Board (ICB). The post holder will create the conditions to allow Healthcare Scientists to have a stimulating and rewarding career with the Trust.
