Occupational Therapist - Band 6 - Rowan Ward
We're seeking a qualified Occupational Therapist to join our team at Rowan Ward, our 18 bed unit in Yeovil.
Rowan ward has 18 beds that provide assessment and treatment primarily for adults of working age who are experiencing an acute mental health problem. We have a team of specialist mental health doctors, nurses and therapists who work closely with our crisis resolution and home treatment team. Rowan ward predominantly provides services for people who live in the South Somerset area.
St Andrews Ward in Wells is in the process of moving across to the Yeovil site and will be over in the Summer of 2023 - you will be based across the two wards when both are on site.
Provide advance assessment, clinical reasoning and evidence-based interventions using a collaborative, recovery approach and be skilled at positive risk management.
You'll support junior staff and supervise the Band 5 Occupational Therapist on the Ward, carrying out appraisals therefore this is a great opportunity for someone looking for some line management responsibilities.
Main duties of the job
- Provide advance assessment, clinical reasoning and evidence-based interventions using a collaborative, recovery approach and be skilled at positive risk management.
- To use evidence-based models of practice to inform assessments
- To develop with professional and operational support the Occupational Therapy service on the Rowan site.
- To hold responsibility for own caseload and undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, working without direct supervision but having access to a Senior Occupational Therapist when required.
- Be a resource and role model for Junior staff, seeking opportunities for development as appropriate
- Participating in the Service's formal Professional Supervision & Appraisal Programme.
- Provide support, guidance and training to staff as required.
- Support and supervise the Band 5 Occupational Therapist.

- Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools (eg. explanation, negotiation, persuasion, motivation, and empathy) to communicate effectively with individuals in order to progress assessment and treatment programmes. This will include individuals who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating.
- To be aware of and appropriately manage sensitive and/or complicated information. To deal sensitively with service users, relatives / carers who may have high levels of anxiety caused due to Mental health presentations, emotional distress, pain, dementia, and other disorders.
- To represent the Service and/or individual individuals at clinical meetings and case conferences to ensure the delivery of a coordinated multidisciplinary service and to ensure that Occupational Therapy is integrated into the overall treatment programme. This will include discussion of individual care, recommendations on best course of action and change to existing plans, individual progress, and discharge planning.
- To provide written and verbal reports to members of the multidisciplinary team during treatment and at discharge from the service.
- To communicate at an advanced level effectively and work collaboratively in partnership with a wider range of services examples include: acute and mental health services, in-patient and community medical and nursing staff, pharmacy practitioners, psychological therapists, GP services, Community Directorate, housing providers, voluntary agencies, Recovery college, MIND, Adult Social care, PCT, substance misuse services, the police and other emergency services, the Probation Service, NHS Direct, the Safeguarding Team and any other stakeholders involved in a persons care.
