Job summary
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a specialty doctor in palliative medicine for 6 sessions per week on a fixed term basis for 6 months. The post holder will provide clinical care for patients in the acute hospital and community setting, providing an ideal opportunity for any clinician to develop their skills and knowledge in this field. There is an expectation that the post holder will specifically contribute to the educational program for medical students from Bristol and Peninsula Medical Schools, post graduate doctors in training and nursing and allied health professionals. You will also provide holistic medical support and continuity of care for patients with the clinical nurse specialist team across acute and community settings, under the supervision of our consultants. Opportunities to work with clinicians delivering enhanced supportive care with the oncology teams, and provision of palliative and supportive care to people with non malignant illnesses. This is a fixed term post of 6 sessions per week for 6 months from February 2024 until August 2024.
The service serves a catchment population of approx. 430,000 which reflects the current St Margaret's Hospice footprint.

Main duties of the job
- provide medical palliative care clinical services to patients in a variety of settings mainly in the community, also outpatients and community hospitals
- undertake case reviews with the CNS team, and visit patients who require medical input
- close working with community nursing and primary care colleagues
- be responsible for clinical care of people known to the hospice community team alongside a clinical nurse specialist team
- encourage a holistic response to the care of patients and their families
- participate in teaching for medical students and other health care professionals
- develop Somerset palliative care services in line with appropriate guidelines and frameworks
- support Somerset End of Life individualised care planning
