Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of a Consultant General Paediatrician with a special interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology. We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated colleague to join our established team of general paediatricians. We will be looking for someone with diabetes experience and ideally SPIN (not essential, can be supported in post) and endocrine experience to join our team. There are 10 programmed activities available. The successful candidate will join 13 existing General Paediatricians in providing general paediatric cover in a hot-week rota 1:12 with 1:12 on call. The neonatal unit is covered by six other consultants on a separate rota. The postholder will join 2 other consultants as part of our multidisciplinary diabetic team and enabling us to continue to meet the Department of Health Best Practice guidelines for paediatric diabetes.

The Trust has clear objectives in terms of delivering excellent, safe, and effective patient care and aims for services that are positively rated by patients, families, and stakeholders. The Acute Trust merged with the local community partnership Trust (1st April 2020), to enhance the working together across these services. Somerset Foundation Trust also merged with nearby Yeovil District Hospital Trust ( 1st April 2023) to provide equity of services throughout the county of Somerset.

Main duties of the job

In summary the post holder will contribute to the following clinical services:

  • Inpatient care for general paediatric wards
  • Hospital based diabetes clinics, including transition clinics
  • Endocrine Clinics
  • General Paediatric Clinic
  • Support to the new SLASH service.
  • Ward consults of diabetes patients
  • Late shifts on a 1:12 basis, corresponding with oncall (additional to a middle grade or nurse practitioner)
  • 1:12 PAU shifts at a weekend during the winter months
  • Supervision of junior doctors.
  • The care and support of other team members and colleagues.
  • SPA activity
