Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Band 4 to work towards obtaining the British Casting Certificate and to become an Orthopaedic Practitioner rotating between our Orthopaedic Outpatients and Plaster Room at Yeovil District Hospital.
On successful completion of your training you will progress to a Band 5 Orthopaedic Practitioner.
Main duties of the job
To learn how to apply casts to patients as directed by Orthopaedic Practitioners. To work towards the BOA/RCN[SOTN]/AOT Casting Techniques Certificate. To learn the correct way to hold limbs whilst a cast is be applied. To learn the application of Casts/Back slabs/splints and the use of the plaster saw for removal of cast under supervision by an Orthopaedic Practitioner. To undertake clinical tasks, specimen collection and testing, capillary blood sugars for identified patients. To carry out aseptic procedures. To undertake simple dressings and obtain wound swabs. To assist with personal care, skins care, dressing/undressing and preparation of food as part of a rehabilitation programme. To provide emotional and physical support to patients. To document/record accurately all aspects of nursing/casting tasks undertaken, as delegated by Orthopaedic Practitioner/Staff Nurse. To have a understanding of ordering work based supplies and stationery and for maintaining stocks within the plaster room. To be responsible for filing patient records. To provide and receive routine and sensitive information, with multi-disciplinary teams, agencies and patients or carers. To attend staff meetings as required. To understand and recognise their limitations within the department. To work with the Clinical lead and the Department managers to ensure that the processes and systems are implemented to ensure that safe, effective and high quality care are delivered to children and adults.
