Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious intensive care consultant to join our department, which delivers high quality services to a population of around 535,000.
Next year, we look forward to moving in to our purpose-built 22 bed Critical Care Unit, including single patient rooms with balconies and views over the Quantock hills, which will be an expansion of our current 16 (flexible level 2 & 3) beds. This is part of an £80m project additionally providing 8 new operating theatres, interventional radiology theatres and endoscopy suites.
We welcome both single speciality and dual accredited Intensivists.For single speciality colleagues, there is the flexibility of additional day time ICU sessions at Musgrove Park, ICU Follow-Up clinic, sessions supporting patients discharged from Critical Care to the wards, time with the Critical Care Outreach Team, or daytime sessions in Yeovil Hospital ICU or potentially (by separate application in response to their rolling advertisement) a regular commitment to the regional critical care transfer service: Retrieve.
The post would also accommodate dual specialists (of any speciality including but not restricted to anaesthetics); a full-time (10PA post) could have approximately 4 sessions in another speciality in non-ICU weeks, but equally have the option of other ICU sessions as outlined above. There is the option of additional or fewer PAs; we recognise that people have commitments and ambitions outside the workplace too.
Main duties of the job
- Patient safety - to be actively involved in delivering high quality patient centred care and contributing to safety and quality initiatives and improvement projects being undertaken in the trust.
- Education - to supervise and support doctors in training. This will include delivery of teaching sessions and assisting the personal and professional development of our non-consultant staff. It will also include assessment and appraisal of trainees under your supervision with appropriate liaison with Clinical/College tutors when required. The department also supports education of medical students from Bristol and Peninsula.
- Audit - active participation in audit including initiation and supervision of audit projects related to your subspecialist interest. Participation in national audits is encouraged. All projects are approved by the Clinical Effectiveness and Audit Committee.
- Clinical Governance - Staff are accountable and responsible for maintaining their own clinical competence and acting within their competence. In addition, they must comply with requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
- Research - There is an active research programme within ICU to which the new appointees are expected to collaborate with.
- Appraisal/job planning/mandatory training - to fully comply with requirements for annual appraisal and job planning and maintain an up to date mandatory training record.
