Job summary

An exciting fixed term / secondment opportunity has arisen within the Renal department at Musgrove Park Hospital!

This Specialist Renal Dietitian will provide excellent holistic care to the patients in the Musgrove Park Hospital catchment with chronic kidney disease. You will give high quality MDT care to inpatients with advanced Chronic Kidney Disease or with Acute Kidney Injury.

Additionally the department aims to educate and train the wider health community in the care of patients with kidney disease, to benefit this patient group.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high standard of nutrition and dietetic care and support in both an inpatient and outpatient setting
  • To effectively manage an autonomous clinical caseload and to undertake professional duties as a qualified dietitian
  • To advise on the nutritional and dietetic management of renal patients at Musgrove Park Hospital.
  • To participate in clinical supervision
  • To communicate effectively in both clinical and non-clinical settings
  • To act as a resource for the department regarding renal dietetic advice and knowledge
  • To identify and implement process improvements in line with National/Local policies and guidelines
  • Active participation in the governance of the renal service, including audit activity or relevant aspects of patient care

Job responsibilities

  • To communicate effectively with staff, patients, carers, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team. This requires a variety of communication skills including education, motivation and empathy.
  • To liaise with the multidisciplinary team both internally and externally regarding patient prognosis, treatment progression and discharge planning (as for home enteral nutrition) therefore ensuring a coordinated and holistic approach to patient care.
  • To apply advanced clinical reasoning skills to make daily decisions regarding the appropriateness of therapeutic management and prioritisation of a caseload within the scope of practice.
  • To apply comprehensive assessment skills and specialist knowledge, particularly with regard to renal disease. To investigate, analyse, assess, diagnose and treat a range of complex dietetic problems.
  • To formulate safe and effective treatment programmes from the initial assessment, using specialist knowledge and clinical reasoning skills.
  • To employ professional judgement to establish a level of consent, or to work within Trust policy to treat patients lacking the capacity to provide consent.
  • To be responsible for organising and planning a daily caseload to maximise service provision, this includes prioritising and sometimes delegating tasks and supervising this work, either directly or indirectly.
  • To monitor and advise on the overall nutrition of patients within the delegated work area, and to be proactive in initiating appropriate action as required.
  • To develop renal dietary resources and information in line with Trust guidelines and policies.
  • The post holder will be required to review and treat inpatients throughout the clinical specialities with specific renal dietetic needs and outpatients under the direct care of the renal clinics.
