Job summary
We are excited to invite applications for a full time Trust Doctor (ST1/2 Level) to join a dynamic Ophthalmology team, based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset.
The Ophthalmic Department in Taunton currently has a total of 12 Ophthalmic Consultants, 2 SAS doctors, 2 Trust Doctors and 5 deanery registrars. There are also 12 specialist nurses in the department offering a number of clinics, including injection clinics.
Main duties of the job
Available for 12 months, the post, as a Trust Doctor, will benefit from a similar training timetable and educational supervision as that enjoyed by the registrars from the Peninsula rotation.
This post would be most suitable for candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in Ophthalmology in the UK.
Surgical supervision and training will be included. Previous appointees have been successful in obtaining a national training number. It is also suitable for candidates pursuing the CESR training route, and the successful candidate would be supported with this.
This post is a Taunton-based appointment, but may include clinics in peripheral community hospitals. There will be an on-call commitment as well as timetabled sessions in the acute referral clinic in line with other trainees.

You will support the consultants in providing the full range of general and specialist ophthalmic services to patients, as outlined in the proposed timetable.
Except in emergencies or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you will be responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in your Job Plan, as will be reviewed from time to time.
You will also be responsible for the associated duties set out in of the Terms and Conditions, and these include adherence to the recently published policy on applications for annual leave.
You will be expected to help with the education of medical students, and doctors in training. You may be asked to assist in the assessment and appraisal of trainees, and you will keep the Clinical and/or College Tutor aware of any educational/professional problems that may arise. You will also be expected to contribute to the academic life of the Ophthalmology Department, especially with regard to the Friday afternoon teaching timetable. The College tutor is Mr Indy Sian.
You will actively participate in audit. You will be expected to initiate and supervise audit projects related to your sub-specialty interest, and will liaise with the audit speciality Lead Consultant. All audit projects, including Trust directed audit are approved by the Clinical Effectiveness and Audit Committee. Participation in national audit is encouraged.
All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisations regarding supervision.
The appointee should become familiar with local clinical policies, guidelines, and protocols, and will participate in the Trusts appraisal and continuing professional development processes for medical staff. You will be expected to participate in the Trusts incident reporting process, particularly in respect of the reporting of clinical incidents.
Research is encouraged, particularly when this is appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and to the service development of the department. Opportunities are available within the Trust with applications for funding co-ordinated by the Trusts Associate Medical Director.
You will be expected to provide cover where possible for colleagues in their absence, and to deal with emergencies as the occasion demands.
