Assistant Psychologist - Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated Assistant Psychologist to work with neurological rehabilitation services in Somerset. The post offers an exciting opportunity to deliver specialist neuropsychological rehabilitation to patients with stroke and acquired brain injury, linking closely with established multidisciplinary teams.

2 x roles available - South Petherton, Dene Barton. Full OR Part-Time hours available.

The successful candidate will fulfil a key role in delivering the neuropsychology service to patients with acquired brain injury, including stroke. This will involve supporting our screening programmes for cognitive problems and mood disorder, and delivering individualised treatment plans as directed by a member of the psychology team.

There are opportunities for working in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and delivering individual and group work. The successful applicant will be involved in service development, audit and other projects. Professional supervision will be provided by a Clinical Psychologist.

The Assistant Psychologist post will provide you with excellent opportunities to develop a wide range of clinical skills and experience. This post will be attractive to applicants who would like to develop professionally across a broad range of psychological competencies.

Main duties of the job

To support the delivery of specialist psychology services in stroke and neurological rehabilitation by conducting clinical assessments and administering psychometric instruments as appropriate; being involved in service development/evaluation and audit projects; delivering basic therapeutic and rehabilitation interventions; and providing training.

  • To conduct specialised clinical assessments, including the use of psychometric instruments with people who have neurological conditions or stroke, mental health problems and present with challenging behaviour, or are thought to pose a risk to others. Such assessment work will involve working in a range of community settings. This will involve judgements involving a range of facts or situations which require analysis or comparison of a range of options.
  • To provide individual psychological therapy/support to service users, referred to, or care co-ordinated, by the Neurological Rehabilitation and Stroke Services utilising advanced counselling skills, cognitive-behavioural techniques, skills training and other modalities as appropriate.
  • To use highly developed, persuasive, negotiating and education skills to liaise with mental health/other professionals/agencies as required with respect to assessment, treatment and management of service-user referrals to Neurological Rehabilitation and Stroke Services.
  • To communicate effectively and sensitively with service users, their families and carers, and to maintain a high degree of professionalism.

  • Experience of undertaking planned psychological interventions with adults with neurological conditions (stroke or acquired brain injury)

  • Prior experience as an Assistant Psychologist
