Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated, organised and hard working individual to join our department for a Clinical Fellow year in Oncogeriatrics.

The post will involve a 70% Care of the elderly and 30% Oncology split. The post will enable the appointee to develop experience in managing acute and chronic medical problems in older patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting as well as preparing them for a more senior role in geriatrics. It will also provide experience in oncogeriatrics, which will involve outpatient reviews and contribution to an oncogeriatric MDT as well as some liaison work with, at times, in-reach to an oncology ward. There will also be an expectation that the successful candidate will contribute to ongoing oncology research and the operational development of the oncogeriatric service, including involvement in data collection, analysis and presentation of outcomes.

Main duties of the job

Under the direction of senior colleagues, you will undertake the duties below; these are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service. There is potential flexibility in the timetable to take on additional roles to broaden your experience and enhance your portfolio.

This post is equivalent to a first year registrar role in Geriatrics. Duties will include, supporting on a consultant ward round, independent ward rounds and geriatric clinics and a contribution to the medical registrar on call rota. The postholder will also be expected to manage time and clinical priorities efficiently, communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues. To use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care.

Cooperation with nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team (pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech and language therapists, dieticians) is mandatory.
