Head of Medical Physics (Radiology and Radiation Protection) - 8D

This is a really exciting opportunity for an experienced individual to lead and develop our newly created Medical Physics Team.

You'll be the driver of building this exciting project from the outset.

The post holder will be principally responsible for developing this new service and providing leadership and robust governance for the team that supports all activities of a medical physics service.

It is an exciting opportunity for the right applicant who is interested in such a development but who is also keen to lead on innovation and research.

Applicants must be both a Registered Healthcare Scientist with the HCPC and an RPA2000 certified Medical Physics Expert with considerable experience in this area. Applicants should ideally hold RWA and RPA certification with RPA 2000.

Main duties of the job

The post holder:

  • Is theHead of Medical Physics (Radiology and Radiation Protection),accountable for the high standard of the multiple, highly specialist clinical scientific and technical services provided by medical physics to Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (SFT).
  • Provides professional expertise in Medical Physics and Protection ensuring Trust-wide compliance with legislation, codes of practice and other relevant guidance in relation to ionising radiations including acting as:
  • Accredited Radiation Protection Adviser(RPA) under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), providing highly specialised scientific support and expert advice to all areas delivering ionising radiations
  • Medical Physics Expert(MPE) under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R2017), providing highly specialised scientific support and expert advice in to all areas delivering ionising radiations, working collaboratively with the MPEs in radiotherapy.
  • Radiation Waste Advisor (RWA)providing highly specialised scientific support and expert advice to all areas involved with radioactive waste.
  • Acts asProfessional Leadwithin the medical physics department
  • Povides formal teaching and tutorials to postgraduate students (MSc level, FRCR) and at courses run by medical physics
  • Responsible for the research and development activities within medical physics
  • Responsible for ensuring that personal dosimetry records are maintained, in line with legislation.

Examples are dealing with enquiries from press and public following a major radiation incident, communicating risks after a radiation exposure (including to pregnant staff and patients), major changes to building plans, removal of highly complex diagnostic X-ray equipment from clinical use etc.
