Job summary

This is a substantive appointment for a colleague to work alongside the six current Respiratory Physicians in the Somerset Lung Centre and Integrated and Urgent care Directorate at Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. This new post will support existing services and the post holder will be actively encouraged to help develop services according to their sub-specialist interests. Clinical research is actively encouraged and supported in the department as are teaching and training.

The Respiratory Team currently take 3.5 slots of the 21 on the general medical take rota, with respiratory medicine accounting for more than 20% of the admissions. We provide a Consultant led weekday review service to inpatient referrals on AMU and other wards. This promotes early access to respiratory expertise. We aim to provide quality, safe patient care, excellent patient experience and outcomes with low length of stay. It also supports the trust ambulatory care agenda. We are working towards 7-day specialist services across the medical directorate.

Main duties of the job

You and your clinical manager will agree a prospective Job Plan that sets out your main duties and responsibilities, a schedule for carrying out your Programmed Activities, your managerial responsibilities, your accountability arrangements, your objectives and supporting resources.This post is a Taunton-based appointment.

The appointee is expected to review and finalise the programme with the Respiratory Clinical Service Lead and the Clinical Director, within 3 months of commencing the post.

Job Plan

The post is in line with the National Contract for hospital consultants. The team is committed to equitable distribution of workload between colleagues. The clinical workload can vary and a degree of flexibility isnecessary within the programs to deliver this activity. Additional PA's may be available. An example timetable is detailed below:

To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring respiratory and acute medical services both as in and outpatients, as outlined in the proposed programme.

To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in Musgrove Park Hospital.

Except in emergencies, or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in your Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time.

You are responsible for the associated duties set out in the Terms and Conditions of Service.The purpose of including agreed personal objectives in your Job Plan is to set out in clear and transparent terms what you and your clinical manager agree should reasonably be achieved in the year in question. These objectives are not contractually binding in themselves, but you have a duty to make all reasonable efforts to achieve them.

You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover and to provide enhanced medical / respiratory support to the hospital. When not on an on-call rota, we may in exceptional circumstances ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you. You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities. Where emergency recalls of this kind become frequent, we will review the need to introduce an on-call rota.
