Job summary

We are looking to recruit a high calibre individual to be part of our clinical coding team.

An opportunity exists for an accredited clinical coder looking to advance their career within the profession.

We require a motivated and enthusiastic individual to be part of our extremely busy clinical coding team. The successful candidate must be flexible and able to work under pressure to deadlines.

Clinical coding is a high profile area of work as the data collected by the Team is essential for the effective management of the Trust and directly influences its income through Payment by Results and.

A relocation package may be offered for this position.

Main duties of the job

The colleague will be responsible for extracting clinical information from the Medical casenotes, either in paper format or increasingly from the electronic patient information system, and for translating diagnostic and procedural information into national ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes.

The requirement is to produce consistent, accurate, complete and timely coded clinical data to facilitate managers and clinicians in the monitoring, planning and provision of high quality patient care.

The post holder must apply clinical codes adhering to National standards, local policies and meet the monthly coding deadline.

Clinical codes are the source for Healthcare Resource Groups, which are used to determine NHS Reference costs and the basis for payment by results.

You will play a vital role in attracting the correct reimbursement for Trust activity

  • To liaise with and work closely with department colleagues to ensure that departmental objectives and targets are achieved
  • Work closely with the Management team to ensure that the Service develops in line with both the needs of the Organisation and the National Requirements
  • To take responsibility for own work
  • Work efficiently both as an individual and as part of a team
  • Achieve demanding monthly coding deadlines (and sometimes changing deadlines) while ensuring accuracy is maintained
  • To share ideas for improvements to department procedures and policies
  • Abstraction skills in relation to clinical classifications
  • Ability to effectively research using the internet, journals, papers
  • The post holder will have a particularly high level of access to sensitive clinical information which is specific to individual patients and as such is required to respect that data. This means that it is a requirement of the post that the post holder has a working knowledge of what the term confidentiality means and the requirements of the Trusts confidentiality policy including its practical application.
  • Use judgement and experience to critically analyse the range of complex clinical information required to assign diagnostic and procedural codes in accordance with National Standards and local policies

  • At least three years clinical coding experience
  • Be experienced in the use of ICD-10 and OPCS-4
  • Have experience in working in a clinical coding department in an acute Trust

Knowledge

Essential

  • Attained Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification
  • The National Standards that direct the use of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 in the UK.
  • The anatomy, physiology and terminology that describes the human body, its diseases and treatments
  • Wider informatics issues within the NHS such as Terming and HRGs
  • Use of other computer systems and software (essentially computer literacy)

Desirable

  • The uses of encoded clinical data in hospitals and the wider NHS
  • Microsoft applications - specifically Word and Excel

Skills

Essential

  • Evidence of a good standard of literacy/English language skills
  • Ability to liaise appropriately with a range of hospital personnel
  • Communicate confidence and professionalism both verbally and non-verbally
  • Ability to discuss cases and examples whilst maintaining confidentiality
