Job summary

CONSULTANT IN CARDIOLOGY (with sub-speciality interest in pacing and devices)

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team of highly motivated professionals, in a progressive department, providing high quality cardiology services to the people of Somerset. We are looking to appoint a consultant cardiologist (10 PA post) with an interest in pacing and complex devices for a substantive appointment at Musgrove Park Hospital to join 12 other cardiology consultants. An additional specialist interest in heart failure would be welcomed and the opportunity exists for electrophysiology sessions in Bristol if you are interested.

A commitment to weekend ward rounds (1 in 7 weekends) will be expected as well as the routine ward and clinic work shared equally with the other 12 consultants.

Interviews will be held on Friday 13th May 2022.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a team of thirteen Consultant Cardiologists attending the wards on a rolling basis (3 weeks every 12 weeks). Currently the non-interventionalists work a 1:6 weekend rota which will likely change to 1:7 with this appointment. Outpatient clinics are held at various locations. Pacing lists are variable with operator but in general 3 simple devices or 2 complex devices are listed for each session.

Time is included in the job plan for support of junior medical staff and specialist nurses and cardiac physiologists. You will join the other consultants in providing clinical teaching to Bristol medical students from years 3 and 5 and also to junior doctors.

You will be required to fulfil the requirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil the requirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council.

Research is encouraged, particularly when this is appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and to the service development of the department.

You will be required to take part in the relevant national audits that apply to their work, particularly the MINAP and BCIS audits.

You will have responsibility for undertaking administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department. This is accounted for in DCC and SPA allocations.

About us

The inpatient facility comprises a 9 bed Coronary Care Unit with an integral cardiac catheter department with 3 Siemens catheter Labs. There are 12 day-case beds and 6 recovery beds attached to the catheter lab, a cardiology day case unit incorporating a radial lounge. The department has its own dedicated outpatient facilities and 4 echo laboratories. In addition, the cardiologists supervise the care of cardiac patients on Fielding Ward.

The cardiologists do not contribute to the medical on-call rota. In addition, there is an acute chest pain assessment area in the A&E department, staffed and run by specialist nurses, supported by the consultant cardiologists.

Musgrove Park Hospital is an award winning, progressive and ambitious District General Hospital, the largest in Somerset providing acute and community services to over 340,000 people, with an outstanding reputation for the provision of a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and specialist services. The cardiology department also provides secondary care for the remainder of Somerset covering ~600k patients in total.

Taunton is a beautiful part of the country, with all the benefits of a modern county town, yet only minutes away from spectacular areas of outstanding natural beauty and dramatic coastline. The town has excellent schools, and benefits from useful road, rail and air links. The cities of Bristol and Exeter are less than an hour away.
