Job summary

An exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team as a Maternity Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. As part of the new Tobacco Reduction Service, you will support women to stop smoking, improving outcomes for their babies and long-term health outcomes for families. Smoking during pregnancy is the leading modifiable risk factor for poor birth outcomes, including stillbirth, miscarriage, and pre-term birth. With the risk of still birth increasing by 47% in pregnant smokers, these risks continue into the postnatal period with the risk of Sudden Infant Death being 3 times more likely. In this role you can make a real difference.

You will provide advice and support to women who want to stop smoking and have a positive impact on pregnancy outcomes, playing a key role integrating tobacco treatment into routine maternity care.

You will be motivated, passionate, organised and proactive with significant experience in smoking cessation and/or working within maternity services. This role will be demanding, and it will be essential that you use your own judgement to prioritise competing demands and workload effectively to specific timescales.

This is an exciting time to join our team and the wider Smoking in Pregnancy network within the county. As we move towards the merger of the hospital trusts you will be enabling the provision of excellent care and service for all of those families giving birth in Somerset.

Main duties of the job

  • To embed smoking cessation into routine maternity care for all those who were smoking at conception/continue to smoke during pregnancy assisting maternity teams to provide interventions in line with NICE and NCSCT guidance.
  • To be responsible for assessment, planning and delivery of a programme of tobacco reduction interventions to women on the maternity wards and clinics, and refer seamlessly into Mums2Be Smokefree.
  • To support planning, delivery and recording of an effective stop smoking intervention that is matched to patient need. Ensuring a secure, confidential record system is maintained allowing prompt access to individual patients records when necessary.
  • To liaise with maternity staff ensuring a timely and appropriate service of high quality is delivered according to demand, need and availability.
  • Be an autonomous practitioner, responsible for assessing and agreeing patient requirements, including planning appropriate activities and products to meet those needs.
  • To prioritise women effectively establishing and managing own caseload.
  • To share with women the advantages and disadvantages of smoking cessation, pharmaceutical products and e-cigarettes and their use during pregnancy.
  • To keep up to date with the changing evidence base relevant policy pronouncements including NICE guidance, clinical developments and changes in guidance.
  • To undertake training to acquire the specialist skills needed to develop the role.

  • To liaise with and empower pregnant woman/person to develop, implement and evaluate their own stop smoking or harm reduction plan, considering scientific evidence, NICE guidance, and the experiences of the individual patient.
  • Following assessment of the pregnant woman/person, to provide tailored support and motivational interviewing to pregnant woman/person, to gain commitment to quit.
  • To work within a framework of flexibility, acknowledging individual preferences and accommodating the needs of each individual.
  • To educate and motivate woman/pregnant person in relation to tobacco control, particularly with respect to neonatal outcomes, second-hand smoke and approaches to minimising risk.
  • To develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with all key smoking cessation and tobacco control partners.
  • To liaise with and influence relevant health and other professionals to ensure that the service retains a high profile and acts as a key priority service for those accessing maternity and neonatal services.
